• Karnataka government has indicated renewed focus on expediting the long-pending Bairakuppe bridge project over the Kabani river.
• The project aims to improve interstate connectivity between Kerala’s Wayanad district and Karnataka’s Kodagu region.
• The Chief Minister has assured that the proposal will soon be placed before the state Cabinet for further approval and processing.
• Kerala officials have already completed key approach road works, while delays on the Karnataka side have slowed progress.
• The bridge is expected to support travel, healthcare access, education, and regional trade once completed.
The Karnataka government has stepped up efforts to fast-track the long-pending Bairakuppe bridge project, which is planned across the Kabani river to improve connectivity between Karnataka and Kerala. The development comes after discussions between Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and Kerala Public Works Department Minister P K Basheer, where the status and pending approvals of the project were reviewed.
The Chief Minister has assured that the proposal will be taken up soon at the Karnataka Cabinet level, indicating movement towards administrative clearance for the project. He has also directed officials to initiate necessary groundwork, including procedural approvals and land-related processes required to move the project forward.
The proposed bridge will link Perikkalloor in Kerala’s Wayanad district with Bairakuppe in Karnataka’s Kodagu district. The project has been under consideration for several decades and has already received approvals at different administrative stages in the past. However, execution has remained incomplete due to delays, particularly on the Karnataka side.
Officials have noted that the approach road on the Kerala side has already been completed, while corresponding work in Karnataka has remained pending for a long period. This imbalance in execution has been one of the key reasons for the delay in overall completion of the project.
Originally proposed in the mid-1990s, the Bairakuppe bridge project also received in-principle approval from the Union Ministry of Surface Transport in the early 2000s. Despite these approvals, progress has been slow due to procedural clearances and infrastructure execution gaps across both states.
Once completed, the bridge is expected to significantly improve connectivity for border regions of Karnataka and Kerala. It will provide better access for residents to healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and key transport hubs in Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Mysuru, and Bengaluru regions. The project is also expected to ease travel between key towns such as Pulpally, Sulthan Bathery, Kalpetta, and Kozhikode, while improving movement of goods and reducing pressure on existing road routes.
