Construction of Mumbai’s Sion Road Over Bridge is progressing, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation targeting reopening by March 2027. The bridge, a key east-west link connecting Sion, Dharavi and surrounding areas, is being rebuilt in coordination with railway authorities following demolition of the ageing structure. The project involves complex engineering work over active rail lines and forms part of Mumbai’s broader infrastructure renewal programme aimed at improving traffic flow, connectivity and safety across one of the city’s busiest transport corridors.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has stepped up construction of the Sion Road Over Bridge (ROB), with civic officials targeting completion and reopening of the structure by March 2027. The project, located in central Mumbai, is being executed in coordination with railway authorities and forms part of broader efforts to upgrade ageing transport infrastructure across the city.
The bridge serves as an important east-west link connecting Sion with Dharavi and surrounding neighbourhoods. The earlier structure was demolished after concerns regarding its condition and serviceability, necessitating the construction of a new bridge designed to meet current traffic and safety requirements. Authorities have indicated that work is progressing on schedule, with several key construction activities now underway.
According to civic officials, the reconstruction project involves substantial engineering work because the bridge passes over active railway corridors. Construction activities require close coordination between the BMC, Central Railway and other agencies to ensure that work can be undertaken without disrupting rail operations. As a result, several components of the project are being executed during designated railway blocks and restricted working windows.
The project includes the construction of new bridge spans, approach roads and supporting infrastructure. Officials stated that fabrication and erection of structural components are progressing in phases, with preparatory works and foundation-related activities already completed in several sections. The authorities have also been coordinating utility shifting and ancillary infrastructure works required for the bridge's integration with the surrounding road network.
The redevelopment of the Sion bridge has assumed significance because of its role in daily traffic movement across central Mumbai. The closure of the old structure has affected vehicular circulation patterns, requiring commuters to use alternative routes. Once completed, the new bridge is expected to restore a direct connection between key residential, commercial and transport corridors in the area.
Infrastructure upgrades involving road overbridges have become increasingly important in Mumbai as authorities seek to replace ageing structures while improving traffic capacity and commuter safety. Several bridges across the city have undergone inspections, repairs, reconstruction or replacement in recent years as part of wider infrastructure renewal initiatives.
Officials noted that the Sion Road Over Bridge project remains one of the major bridge reconstruction works currently underway in Mumbai. The March 2027 target has been set after accounting for construction requirements, railway clearances and engineering timelines associated with work over operational rail tracks.
With multiple stages of construction now advancing simultaneously, civic authorities expect the project to continue gathering pace over the coming months. Upon completion, the bridge is expected to restore a critical transport link and support smoother movement across one of Mumbai’s busiest urban corridors.
