Noida International Airport at Jewar has commenced commercial passenger operations with the arrival of the first scheduled IndiGo flight from Lucknow, marking a major milestone for one of India's largest greenfield aviation infrastructure projects. The airport is expected to strengthen connectivity across the National Capital Region and western Uttar Pradesh while easing pressure on Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport. IndiGo will initially connect the airport to 16 domestic destinations as operations expand in phases.
Noida International Airport officially commenced commercial passenger operations on Monday with the successful arrival of the first scheduled IndiGo flight from Lucknow, marking the operational launch of the long-awaited greenfield airport at Jewar in Uttar Pradesh. The milestone represents a significant addition to the country's aviation infrastructure and is expected to improve connectivity across the National Capital Region (NCR) and western Uttar Pradesh.
The inaugural IndiGo service departed from Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Lucknow and landed at the newly operational airport in Jewar, becoming the first commercial flight to use the facility. Following the arrival, the airport also began its scheduled outbound operations, signalling the start of regular passenger services after years of planning and construction.
Developed as a major aviation hub for the NCR, Noida International Airport is intended to complement Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport by creating a dual-airport system capable of accommodating rising passenger and cargo demand. The first phase includes one runway and one passenger terminal with an annual handling capacity of approximately 12 million passengers.
IndiGo has become the launch carrier at the airport and plans to gradually expand operations by connecting Jewar with more than 16 domestic destinations. The airline's network will include major cities such as Bengaluru and Hyderabad, along with destinations including Amritsar, Chandigarh, Dharamshala, Jaipur, Lucknow, Navi Mumbai, Pantnagar and Srinagar as services are rolled out in phases.
The airport project has been developed under a public-private partnership model, with Yamuna International Airport Private Limited, a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, serving as the concessionaire responsible for its development and operation. The facility received its aerodrome licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation earlier this year before being inaugurated in March, paving the way for commercial operations.
The commencement of services is expected to stimulate economic activity across the Yamuna Expressway region, which has witnessed significant investments in industrial, logistics and real estate developments linked to the airport project. Improved air connectivity is also anticipated to support business travel, tourism and cargo movement while strengthening the broader infrastructure ecosystem in the region.
The airport forms part of a larger multi-modal transport strategy, with future integration planned through road, metro and regional rail connectivity. Additional airlines are also expected to begin operations from the facility as its route network expands and subsequent development phases are implemented.
With commercial operations now underway, Noida International Airport becomes one of India's newest operational aviation gateways and is expected to play an increasingly important role in meeting the country's growing passenger traffic and logistics requirements while supporting regional economic development.
