The Odisha government has inaugurated a new 13-kilometre six-lane road connecting Infocity and Ekamra Kanan in Bhubaneswar while also laying the foundation stone for the Jayadev Vihar–Nandankanan road expansion and flyover project. The new corridor, built at a cost of INR 108.24 crore, is expected to ease congestion along NH-16 and improve connectivity in the city. The proposed flyover and road widening project, estimated at over INR 949 crore, forms part of a broader urban mobility plan for the state capital.
The Odisha government has strengthened Bhubaneswar's urban transport infrastructure with the inauguration of a 13-kilometre six-lane road connecting Infocity and Ekamra Kanan and the launch of the Jayadev Vihar–Nandankanan road expansion and flyover project. The initiatives are aimed at improving traffic movement and addressing congestion on one of the city's busiest corridors.
The newly inaugurated road stretches from the Institute of Mathematics to Ekamra Kanan via Infocity and has been developed at a cost of INR 108.24 crore. The corridor provides an alternative route parallel to the existing Jayadev Vihar–Nandankanan stretch and is expected to divert a significant volume of traffic from the heavily used NH-16 corridor connecting Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.
According to government officials, the project became possible after a coordinated eviction and demolition drive that reclaimed encroached government land, particularly around the Salia Sahi area. Nearly 800 metres of government land were cleared to enable the construction of the new alignment, creating a continuous alternative road designed to improve traffic distribution across the city.
Alongside the road inauguration, the state laid the foundation stone for the Jayadev Vihar–Nandankanan road expansion and flyover project, which carries an estimated investment of more than INR 949 crore. The project will upgrade the existing corridor into an eight-lane roadway and include the construction of a flyover to improve traffic flow through one of Bhubaneswar's fastest-growing urban stretches.
The Jayadev Vihar–Patia–KIIT corridor has witnessed rapid commercial and residential development over the past decade, with educational institutions, hotels, corporate offices, residential complexes and tourist destinations such as Nandankanan Zoological Park generating substantial daily traffic. The expansion project is intended to accommodate increasing vehicle volumes and reduce bottlenecks, particularly during peak hours.
The infrastructure announcements formed part of a broader programme marking the completion of two years of the present state government. During the event, the government also launched the Mukhyamantri Annapurna Yojana, under which beneficiaries covered by the National Food Security Act and the State Food Security Scheme will receive an additional 5 kg of free rice each month, taking total monthly entitlement to 10 kg per beneficiary. The scheme is expected to benefit around 3.28 crore people from 1.06 crore families, with an annual expenditure of approximately INR 8,813 crore.
In addition, the foundation stone was laid for a 20-storey Janashraya Bhavan on Janpath, proposed at a cost of INR 874 crore, to provide affordable temporary accommodation for around 2,000 visitors to the state capital. The government also initiated the distribution of smartphones to more than 75,000 Anganwadi workers, supervisors and block coordinators as part of its digital governance initiatives.
