Synopsis

• Ranchi's Birsa Munda Airport reported a net profit of INR 87.56 crore in FY 2025-26, its highest profit in recent years.
• Passenger traffic reached around 27 lakh during the fiscal, highlighting growing air travel demand in Jharkhand.
• The airport has witnessed steady profit growth over the past three years, supported by higher passenger volumes and operational improvements.
• Infrastructure upgrades, including a new ATC tower, apron expansion and improved navigation systems, have strengthened airport capacity.
• The growth reflects Ranchi's rising importance as a regional aviation hub and supports broader economic and tourism activity in the state.

Birsa Munda Airport in Ranchi recorded a net profit of INR 87.56 crore in FY 2025-26, supported by strong passenger growth and improved operational performance. The airport handled nearly 27 lakh passengers during the financial year, making it one of the strongest-performing regional airports in eastern India.
According to Airport Director Vinod Kumar, the airport's progress in passenger handling, infrastructure development, service quality and financial performance reflects the increasing economic activity and connectivity needs of Jharkhand. The growth comes amid a broader rise in domestic air travel across India, particularly in Tier-II cities where demand for air connectivity has been expanding steadily.
The latest profit marks a significant increase from previous years. Birsa Munda Airport had reported a net profit of INR 49.21 crore in FY 2023-24, which rose to INR 64.60 crore in FY 2024-25 before reaching INR 87.56 crore in FY 2025-26. The consistent rise highlights the airport's ability to improve revenue generation while managing operations efficiently.
Passenger traffic has also grown substantially over the past decade. The airport handled approximately 6.5 lakh passengers in FY 2014-15, compared with nearly 27 lakh passengers in FY 2025-26. Airport officials attributed this growth to better air connectivity, increasing business travel, rising tourism activity and stronger economic development across Jharkhand and neighbouring regions.
The airport has witnessed several infrastructure upgrades in recent years to support the growing traffic. These include the construction of a new Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower, installation of Doppler VHF Omnidirectional Range (DVOR) and Instrument Landing System (ILS) facilities, apron expansion, passenger boarding bridges and enhanced security infrastructure. These improvements have helped increase operational efficiency, improve aircraft handling capacity and strengthen safety standards.
Authorities have also focused on upgrading passenger amenities as part of efforts to improve the overall travel experience. The airport's modernisation initiatives form part of the Airports Authority of India's broader strategy to strengthen infrastructure at regional airports and support future passenger growth.
In addition to current upgrades, Ranchi airport has been preparing for long-term expansion to accommodate rising traffic levels. Plans related to terminal expansion, operational infrastructure enhancement and capacity augmentation have been discussed over the years as passenger demand continues to increase.
The airport's performance mirrors the strong growth being witnessed across India's aviation sector. Regional airports have emerged as key growth centres as improved connectivity, economic development and government initiatives continue to drive air travel demand beyond major metropolitan markets.
Apart from operational achievements, the airport recently organised Yatri Suvidha Divas, an initiative aimed at passenger engagement and public awareness. The programme included activities related to environmental conservation, health awareness, blood donation and community participation involving passengers and stakeholders.
