• Mobile network services are being restored across Mumbai Metro Line 3’s underground Aqua Line after a prolonged connectivity gap.
• Airtel has activated services between SEEPZ and BKC, while Vodafone Idea has extended coverage from SEEPZ to Acharya Atre Chowk, with further expansion planned.
• The rollout follows the resolution of infrastructure-related issues between telecom operators and the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation.
• Full corridor-wide coverage, including the stretch up to Cuffe Parade, is expected to be introduced in phases over the coming weeks.
Passengers travelling on Mumbai Metro Line 3, popularly known as the Aqua Line, will soon be able to access uninterrupted mobile network services across the underground corridor as telecom operators begin restoring connectivity along the route. The development marks a significant improvement for commuters who have faced network blackouts since operations commenced on the city’s first fully underground metro line.
According to the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea have resumed mobile services across sections of the corridor. Airtel’s network is currently operational between SEEPZ and Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), while Vodafone Idea has activated services from SEEPZ to Acharya Atre Chowk station in Worli. MMRC stated that Vodafone Idea’s coverage is expected to be extended further south up to Cuffe Parade in the next phase of deployment.
The restoration of services follows months of discussions between telecom operators and the metro authority regarding deployment of mobile infrastructure inside tunnels and underground stations. Earlier, passengers frequently lost access to calls, messaging, internet services and digital payment platforms once trains entered underground sections of the corridor.
Industry reports indicate that the rollout is being implemented in phases, with operators activating network infrastructure where installations have already been completed. Officials have indicated that all major telecom operators are expected to progressively expand coverage across the entire route.
The 33.5-km Metro Line 3 corridor connects Aarey to Cuffe Parade and serves several key commercial, residential and transport hubs including SEEPZ, BKC, airport stations, Dadar, Siddhivinayak and Worli. Mobile connectivity has been one of the most frequently raised concerns by passengers since the underground line became operational.
Recent developments also indicate progress towards wider telecom participation on the corridor. Reports suggest that infrastructure arrangements have been put in place to facilitate services from multiple operators, enabling commuters to access voice calls, mobile data, digital payments and emergency communication facilities throughout their journey.
With network activation now underway, Mumbai Metro Line 3 is expected to offer a more seamless commuting experience, bringing the Aqua Line closer to the service standards seen on major underground metro systems globally.
