• The Maharashtra government has approved a INR 5,575 crore expansion of the Navi Mumbai Metro network, covering Metro Line 1A and Line 2.
• The project will create a 28-km corridor connecting Sagar Sangam with the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport and add 13 new stations to the network.
• Approved as part of a broader INR 22,611 crore infrastructure package, the expansion aims to strengthen airport connectivity, improve urban mobility and enhance public transport integration across Navi Mumbai.
The Maharashtra government has approved the expansion of the Navi Mumbai Metro network through an investment of INR 5,575 crore, advancing plans to strengthen connectivity between Navi Mumbai's urban centres and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. The decision was taken in the past week by the Cabinet Infrastructure Committee chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
The approval covers Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1A and Metro Line 2, which together will create a continuous 28-km metro corridor extending from Sagar Sangam to the airport. The project forms part of a larger INR 22,611 crore package of transport infrastructure projects cleared for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
According to details approved by the committee, the metro expansion will add 13 new stations and extend the reach of the existing network towards key residential, commercial and transport nodes. The proposed Line 2 corridor will connect Pendhar with the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, providing a direct mass-transit link to one of the region's most significant infrastructure projects.
The expansion is expected to play an important role in integrating the airport with Navi Mumbai's broader transport system. The airport, currently under development, is projected to become a major gateway for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, increasing the need for high-capacity public transport connections linking surrounding urban centres.
Government officials stated that the metro expansion has been planned to improve mobility across Navi Mumbai while reducing dependence on road-based transport. The project is also expected to enhance connectivity between residential neighbourhoods, business districts and emerging development zones that are witnessing increasing urbanisation.
The approval comes as Navi Mumbai continues to emerge as a major growth corridor within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, supported by investments in transport, logistics and airport infrastructure. Metro connectivity is considered a key component of this development framework, enabling integration between different modes of transport and supporting future passenger movement requirements.
The state government has indicated that the project will help create a more connected transit network while supporting long-term infrastructure planning in the region. The metro corridors are expected to improve accessibility to major destinations and strengthen links between existing and upcoming urban centres.
With financial approval now in place, the project will move towards subsequent stages of implementation, including detailed planning, approvals and execution processes required for the expansion of the Navi Mumbai Metro network.
