Synopsis

The Centre has approved an INR 1,359.33 crore project to widen the Nagaur–Bikaner section of National Highway-62 in Rajasthan to four lanes, providing a major boost to road infrastructure in the state's western region. The project will be implemented under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) toll model and is aimed at improving connectivity between Nagaur and Bikaner while enhancing the movement of passengers and freight. The highway upgrade is expected to strengthen regional transport networks, reduce bottlenecks on a key corridor, and support industrial, tourism and economic activity across western Rajasthan. The approval forms part of ongoing efforts to modernise the state's highway infrastructure and improve connectivity across strategic economic centres.

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has approved the four-laning of the Nagaur–Bikaner stretch of National Highway-62 in Rajasthan at an estimated cost of INR 1,359.33 crore, paving the way for a significant highway infrastructure upgrade in the state's western region. The project, approved in the past week, will be executed under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) toll model and is intended to improve connectivity, ease traffic movement and strengthen transport infrastructure between the two cities.
According to official information, the project involves widening the existing highway corridor to four lanes, enabling smoother movement of both passenger and commercial vehicles. The Nagaur–Bikaner route serves as an important transport link within Rajasthan and forms part of the broader NH-62 corridor, one of the state's key national highway networks. The expansion is expected to address existing traffic constraints and improve travel efficiency along the route.
The approved project will be developed through the BOT toll model, under which a private concessionaire finances, constructs and operates the road before transferring it back to the government after the concession period. The model has been used extensively across national highway projects to attract private investment into road infrastructure while accelerating project delivery.
Government officials indicated that the highway widening is expected to strengthen connectivity across western Rajasthan and support economic activity by facilitating faster and safer transportation. Improved road infrastructure is likely to benefit logistics operations, commercial movement and access between urban centres and surrounding districts. Officials also stated that the project could generate employment opportunities during the construction phase and support future investment across the region.
The approval comes amid continued efforts by both the Centre and the Rajasthan government to expand and modernise the state's road network. Over recent years, several highway widening and upgradation projects have been taken up across Rajasthan to improve regional connectivity, enhance road safety and support economic development. The Nagaur–Bikaner four-laning project adds to this pipeline of infrastructure investments and is expected to improve accessibility across an important section of NH-62, which connects several districts across Rajasthan and northern India.
Officials said the project would contribute to a more efficient road transport system in western Rajasthan while supporting industrial and tourism-related activity in the region through improved connectivity and travel conditions.
