Synopsis

The Union Cabinet has approved Phase 2A of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project at an estimated cost of INR 2,169.04 crore, paving the way for a new metro corridor connecting Koteshwar Road with the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The 6.032-km extension will include five stations and will expand the operational Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro network to 77.63 km upon completion. The project is aimed at improving airport connectivity, strengthening urban mobility and supporting future transport demand in Gujarat's largest urban agglomeration. The approval forms part of the Centre's continued investment in urban transit infrastructure and is expected to enhance connectivity between key residential, commercial and transport hubs across Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.

The Union Cabinet has approved Phase 2A of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project, sanctioning an investment of INR 2,169.04 crore for a new metro corridor linking Koteshwar Road with the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The approval, granted in the past week, will add 6.032 km to the city's metro network and strengthen connectivity between Ahmedabad's urban centres and its primary aviation gateway.
According to the official approval, the new corridor will comprise five stations, including four elevated stations and one underground station located at the airport. The route will branch off from the existing metro network at Koteshwar Road, creating a direct public transport connection to the airport while integrating with the broader Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro system.
Upon completion of Phase 2A, the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro network will expand to 77.63 km. The project is designed to provide seamless connectivity between residential neighbourhoods, business districts, Gandhinagar, GIFT City and the airport, reducing dependence on road-based transport and improving travel efficiency across the metropolitan region.
The airport corridor forms part of Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation's broader expansion strategy for the Ahmedabad Metro system. Planning and consultancy work for the project had already been initiated, with Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation incorporating the airport connectivity component into its wider network development programme.
Government officials stated that the project is expected to support economic activity by improving access to the airport and strengthening multimodal transport integration within the city. The corridor is also expected to facilitate movement for business travellers, residents and visitors while supporting future growth in passenger traffic.
The Centre noted that the metro extension is expected to generate employment opportunities during both construction and operational phases. Reports indicate that around 2,000 jobs could be created at the peak of construction activity, with additional direct and indirect employment arising from associated infrastructure and service requirements.
Ahmedabad Metro has witnessed significant expansion over the past two years, with multiple sections of Phase II becoming operational and extending metro services into Gandhinagar and GIFT City. The approval of Phase 2A adds another key component to the network by connecting the airport to the metro system, further strengt
