Synopsis

Rustomjee Group has partnered with the Rotary Club of Bombay Airport to support the Kawale Check Dam project in Vikramgad Taluka of Palghar district, Maharashtra. Scheduled for inauguration on June 7, 2026, the INR 70.58 lakh initiative is expected to improve water availability, enhance agricultural productivity and strengthen livelihoods for nearly 1,800 farming families across 18 villages. Designed as a long-term water conservation and groundwater recharge intervention, the project aims to address recurring water scarcity in the tribal region despite seasonal rainfall. The check dam is expected to store water across a nearly two-kilometre stretch upstream, supporting year-round access to water while encouraging community participation and sustainable resource management.

Rustomjee Group has joined hands with the Rotary Club of Bombay Airport to support the Kawale Check Dam project in Vikramgad Taluka, Palghar district, Maharashtra, with the objective of improving water security and strengthening rural livelihoods in the region. The project, inaugurated in the past week, is expected to benefit nearly 1,800 farming families across 18 villages by creating a sustainable source of water for agriculture and domestic use throughout the year.
Located in a predominantly tribal belt of Maharashtra, the project has been conceived as a long-term response to recurring water shortages that continue to affect local communities despite receiving seasonal rainfall. The check dam has been designed to capture and conserve rainwater, helping improve water availability while reducing dependence on erratic rainfall patterns.
According to project details, the structure is expected to store water across a stretch of nearly two kilometres upstream. This is anticipated to facilitate groundwater recharge, improve access to water resources and support agricultural activities beyond the monsoon season. Enhanced water availability is also expected to contribute to livelihood generation and improve economic resilience among farming households in the region.
The initiative has been implemented with active involvement from local communities, a feature intended to promote ownership and support the long-term sustainability of the asset. The project represents a collaborative effort between community stakeholders, institutional partners and development organisations seeking to address infrastructure gaps through targeted environmental interventions.
With a total investment of approximately INR 70.58 lakh, the project has been positioned as a water resilience initiative capable of generating long-term social, environmental and economic benefits. Beyond meeting immediate water requirements, the intervention seeks to strengthen agricultural productivity and support sustainable development outcomes in the region.
Commenting on the initiative, Namrata Nulwalla, Chief Sustainability Officer at Rustomjee Group, said the company viewed sustainability through the lens of creating measurable and lasting benefits for communities. She noted that water security remained a critical factor in enabling economic stability and social development in rural areas where livelihoods are closely linked to natural resources. She added that the Kawale Check Dam project demonstrated how collaborative interventions could address structural challenges while supporting self-reliance and long-term growth.
Pragna Mehta, President of the Rotary Club of Bombay Airport, said the project illustrated the impact that partnerships with a shared development objective could create. She stated that water security was closely connected to livelihoods, health, education and economic progress, and described the check dam as a significant resource for local tribal and farming communities. She added that the initiative had the potential to support year-round agriculture, strengthen livelihoods, encourage groundwater recharge and contribute to environmental conservation while creating opportunities for future generations.
Established in 1995, Rustomjee Group, through Keystone Realtors Limited, has a significant presence across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The developer has delivered more than 29 million sq ft of construction area and currently has a development pipeline exceeding 46 million sq ft, spanning redevelopment, mass-market and luxury housing projects.
