Synopsis

BMC has launched a city-wide enforcement drive against restaurants and hotels that have illegally occupied mandatory open spaces and emergency access areas across Mumbai. The action follows heightened scrutiny of fire safety compliance and evacuation preparedness at commercial establishments. Civic officials have begun demolishing unauthorised extensions, sheds and service-area encroachments while conducting inspections of permissions, exits and access routes. The drive is expected to continue across multiple wards as authorities seek to ensure compliance with building regulations and prevent safety risks arising from blocked open spaces and unauthorised constructions.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has intensified action against restaurants and hotels that have encroached upon mandatory open spaces, launching a city-wide enforcement drive aimed at restoring emergency access areas and ensuring compliance with building and fire safety regulations. The crackdown gained momentum in the past week following concerns over fire safety and evacuation preparedness at commercial establishments across Mumbai.
One of the first major operations was carried out by the K-West ward office in Andheri West, where civic officials demolished unauthorised extensions at four prominent hospitality establishments. According to civic authorities, the structures had illegally covered open spaces reserved for service access and emergency evacuation, areas that are required to remain unobstructed under municipal regulations.
The action was undertaken following directions from senior civic officials, who instructed ward offices to identify restaurants, hotels and commercial establishments that had enclosed open areas through temporary or permanent structures. During the operation, BMC teams demolished the encroachments and seized furniture, kitchen equipment and other materials found within the unauthorised extensions.
Officials stated that inspections are being conducted jointly by personnel from the health, fire, building and factory departments. The teams are verifying whether establishments have blocked entry and exit points, erected unauthorised sheds or occupied spaces designated for emergency access. Authorities indicated that such violations become particularly concerning during the monsoon season, when temporary coverings, electrical installations and restricted evacuation routes can increase fire and safety risks.
The latest drive forms part of a broader pattern of enforcement by the civic body against illegal constructions in commercial hospitality zones. Similar actions have previously been undertaken in areas such as Kamala Mills, where restaurants and food outlets were found to have enclosed open spaces, constructed unauthorised structures and altered approved layouts in violation of development and fire safety norms.
Municipal officials have indicated that inspections and enforcement measures will continue across Mumbai over the coming weeks. The civic body has maintained that mandatory open spaces, service areas and evacuation routes are essential components of approved building plans and cannot be converted into commercial or operational areas. Authorities have stated that further action will be taken wherever unauthorised constructions, blocked access routes or encroachments are detected during the ongoing inspections.
