Synopsis

• Ludhiana Municipal Corporation has demolished two illegal colonies as part of its ongoing drive against unauthorised developments across the city.
• The action is aimed at curbing illegal plotting and ensuring that residential projects comply with approved urban planning norms and regulations.
• The demolition follows several enforcement drives carried out by the Municipal Corporation and GLADA against illegal colonies, buildings and unauthorised infrastructure.
• Authorities have warned colonisers against developing land without approvals and advised homebuyers to verify project permissions before purchasing plots.
• The crackdown reflects increasing efforts to promote planned urban development and prevent the growth of unapproved residential colonies in Ludhiana.

The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (MC) has intensified its action against illegal real estate developments by demolishing two unauthorised colonies in the city. The demolition was carried out as part of an ongoing campaign against illegal plotting and construction activities that do not have the required approvals from planning authorities.
Officials said the colonies were being developed without obtaining mandatory permissions, making them unauthorised under existing development regulations. During the operation, civic teams demolished structures and infrastructure created as part of the illegal developments to prevent further expansion of the colonies.
The latest action is part of a wider crackdown being undertaken by the Municipal Corporation and the Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA) to curb the growth of illegal colonies across Ludhiana. Authorities have been conducting regular inspections in different parts of the city to identify violations and take action against developers operating outside the approved planning framework.
Over the past few months, several demolition drives have been carried out against unauthorised colonies and illegal constructions. In separate enforcement operations, GLADA demolished multiple illegal buildings and removed roads and other infrastructure developed in colonies that lacked statutory approvals. Areas such as Dhandra, Manakwal, Mehmoodpura and Sahnewal have witnessed similar action as authorities stepped up enforcement measures.
The Municipal Corporation has also taken action against illegal residential, commercial and industrial structures in different parts of Ludhiana. Previous drives included the demolition of unauthorised buildings and illegal developments in locations such as Lohara Road, Peeru Banda and Jaspal Bangar. Civic officials have maintained that enforcement drives will continue and that no unauthorised development will be allowed to proceed in violation of planning norms.
Illegal colonies remain a major concern for urban authorities as many such developments are launched without approvals related to land use, layout plans and civic infrastructure. Buyers often invest in plots without verifying approvals, only to face issues later regarding ownership records, infrastructure connectivity and access to basic services.
Officials have repeatedly advised residents to verify approvals issued by the concerned authorities before purchasing plots in any colony. They have also urged people to check whether a project has received the necessary clearances and development permissions to avoid future legal and financial complications.
The ongoing drive also comes amid broader efforts by Punjab authorities to regulate unauthorised urban expansion and strengthen compliance in the real estate sector. State agencies have been increasing monitoring of illegal colonisation activities while simultaneously exploring solutions for residents who have already purchased properties in unauthorised colonies.
Urban planning experts note that unchecked growth of illegal colonies can place additional pressure on civic infrastructure, including roads, water supply, drainage and waste management systems. As Ludhiana continues to expand, authorities are focusing on ensuring that future development takes place through approved projects that meet planning and infrastructure standards.
