• Reliance Industries and Meta have partnered to develop an AI-enabled data centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat, marking Meta’s first built-to-suit data centre project in India.
• The facility will have an initial capacity of 168 MW, with scope for future expansion, and is expected to support Meta’s global AI and digital infrastructure requirements.
• Reliance will provide end-to-end development and operational services, including renewable energy integration, network connectivity and utility management.
• The project is expected to strengthen India’s position as a destination for large-scale AI infrastructure and hyperscale data centre investments.
Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and Meta have announced a partnership to develop a large-scale AI-enabled data centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat, in a move that underscores India’s growing importance in the global artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure ecosystem.
The proposed facility will be developed with an initial capacity of 168 MW and is expected to be delivered within two years. The project marks Meta’s first built-to-suit data centre investment in India and represents a significant expansion of the technology giant’s global infrastructure footprint.
Under the partnership, Meta will lease capacity at the facility to support its expanding AI computing and digital services requirements. As artificial intelligence applications continue to demand greater computing power, global technology companies are increasingly investing in specialised infrastructure capable of handling large-scale data processing and advanced workloads.
Reliance will be responsible for the complete lifecycle of the project, positioning itself not only as a developer but also as a long-term infrastructure partner. The company will oversee the design, construction and operational management of the facility, including utilities, renewable power integration, network connectivity and managed services.
The choice of Jamnagar reflects the strategic advantages the region offers for hyperscale digital infrastructure. Gujarat has emerged as an attractive destination for large data centre investments due to its industrial ecosystem, access to infrastructure, availability of land and connectivity to key digital networks. The location also benefits from proximity to western submarine cable landing stations and extensive fibre connectivity, which are critical for global data operations.
A notable aspect of the project is its focus on sustainability. The data centre is expected to be powered through renewable energy sources, while desalinated seawater will be used for cooling operations. These measures are intended to support growing industry efforts to reduce the environmental impact of energy-intensive digital infrastructure.
The partnership arrives at a time when countries across the world are competing to attract investments in AI-related infrastructure. Demand for data centres has accelerated significantly as enterprises, governments and technology firms deploy increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence applications. Industry experts view large-scale computing infrastructure as a critical foundation for future economic growth and technological innovation.
For India, the project represents another step towards becoming a major destination for advanced digital infrastructure investments. Policymakers have increasingly positioned data centres as strategic assets capable of supporting economic development, digital transformation and emerging technology ecosystems.
Beyond the immediate infrastructure benefits, the project is expected to enhance India's profile within the global AI value chain while reinforcing long-standing collaboration between Reliance and Meta across connectivity, digital platforms and technology-led services.
The development highlights how international technology partnerships are increasingly shaping the next phase of India's digital growth, with AI infrastructure emerging as a key area of investment and strategic importance.
