• Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel sanctioned INR 629 crore on 8 June 2026 for the four-laning of six major road stretches across Kutch district, covering a combined length of approximately 43.5 km.
• The roads identified for upgrade span key stretches connecting Mundra, Zarpara, Kandagara, Deshalpar, Siracha, and Navinal, including dedicated bypass roads for three villages.
• The upgrade is expected to improve the movement of heavy vehicles operating to and from Mundra Port and the surrounding industrial and commercial hubs.
• Beyond logistics, the state government cited improved rural connectivity, road safety, and a boost to Kutch's tourism sector as additional objectives of the programme.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel approved INR 629 crore earlier this month for the four-laning of six road stretches in Kutch district, in a move directed at strengthening rural road connectivity and easing freight movement along the Mundra Port industrial corridor.
The approval, announced from Gandhinagar on 8 June 2026, covers six specific road stretches across Kutch, with a combined length of approximately 43.5 km. The roads identified for upgrade are: 4.1 km of the Mundra–Luni Vadala Road; 5.1 km covering the widening and improvement of the Deshalpar–Siracha Road; 5.5 km of the Mundra–Zarpara–Kandagara–Dhrab Road, including a bypass for Zarpara village; 3.3 km of the Navinal village bypass; 4.5 km of the Kandagara Mota village road; and a 20 km stretch of the Mundra–Zarpara–Kandagara Road between chainage 19 and 39.
Three of the six components include dedicated bypass roads, a design choice that reflects the dual purpose of the programme — improving daily mobility for rural residents whilst simultaneously removing bottlenecks for commercial freight traffic passing through densely populated village zones.
The Mundra Port connection is a central consideration in the infrastructure rationale. Mundra, home to one of India's largest private ports operated by the Adani Group, handles substantial volumes of container and bulk cargo. The surrounding industrial and commercial hubs generate consistent heavy vehicle movement, and the existing road network in parts of Kutch has been a constraint on the efficient movement of goods. The bypass roads and four-laned stretches are expected to reduce transit times and improve road safety for freight operators on these corridors.
Beyond the logistics dimension, the state government noted that the upgraded road infrastructure would improve ease of living for residents in the rural pockets of Kutch — a district that, despite its economic significance as an industrial and port hub, contains large stretches of sparsely connected rural terrain. The four-laning programme is also expected to support Kutch's tourism sector, which draws visitors to destinations such as the Rann of Kutch, by improving access roads in and around the district.
The approval is part of a broader state-level approach under Chief Minister Patel to systematically upgrade key roads across Gujarat to four-lane standards, with Kutch among the districts being prioritised in the current phase of the programme.
No implementing agency or project timeline has been formally specified in the state government's announcement, and further procedural details are awaited.
