Lucknow fire department issues notices to hotels over safety violations

Synopsis

The Lucknow Fire Department has issued notices to 20 hotels after inspections revealed violations of mandatory fire safety norms, intensifying a citywide compliance drive launched following recent fire incidents at hospitality establishments across the country. The affected hotels have been given 45 days to rectify deficiencies related to firefighting systems, emergency preparedness and evacuation infrastructure. The enforcement action forms part of a broader audit of hotels, restaurants, clubs and commercial establishments being undertaken across the Uttar Pradesh capital. Authorities have warned that failure to address the identified shortcomings within the stipulated period could lead to further action under fire safety regulations. The inspections have highlighted continuing concerns regarding fire preparedness in hospitality properties and other public-use buildings in Lucknow.

The Lucknow Fire Department has served notices on 20 hotels for failing to comply with prescribed fire safety norms, giving the establishments 45 days to address identified deficiencies and strengthen emergency preparedness measures. The action was taken in the past week as part of an ongoing citywide inspection campaign aimed at improving fire safety standards in hospitality and commercial properties.
Officials said the inspections were carried out across multiple hotels to assess compliance with fire prevention and emergency response requirements. During the audits, fire department teams examined firefighting equipment, evacuation arrangements, alarm systems, emergency exits and overall adherence to statutory safety provisions. The inspections revealed shortcomings in a number of properties, prompting authorities to issue formal notices seeking corrective action.
According to the department, the identified deficiencies included inadequately maintained firefighting systems, gaps in emergency evacuation planning and shortcomings in other mandatory safety measures. Hotel operators have been directed to rectify the violations within the stipulated timeframe and submit compliance reports to the authorities. Officials indicated that failure to comply could result in enforcement action under applicable fire safety regulations.
The crackdown forms part of a wider fire safety audit being conducted across Lucknow following heightened concerns over fire risks in public buildings. Inspection teams from all nine fire stations in the city have been undertaking checks at hotels, restaurants, clubs and other establishments where large numbers of people congregate. During the second day of the audit drive alone, nearly half of the inspected establishments were found to be either non-compliant or only partially compliant with fire safety requirements.
Authorities have also focused on awareness and preparedness alongside enforcement. Fire department personnel have conducted training sessions for employees and occupants, covering fire prevention measures, operation of firefighting equipment and emergency evacuation procedures. Mock drills and demonstrations have been organised to familiarise staff with response protocols in the event of an emergency.
The latest inspections come amid increasing scrutiny of fire safety compliance in urban centres. Lucknow authorities recently launched joint audits involving the fire department and the Lucknow Development Authority to examine hotels, guest houses, malls, hospitals, nursing homes and high-rise buildings for adherence to both fire safety and building regulations. The exercise includes verification of approved building plans, emergency infrastructure and firefighting systems.
Fire safety compliance has remained a persistent concern in the city. Earlier this year, fire department officials reported that around 90 hotels in Lucknow were operating without the mandatory fire safety no-objection certificate (NOC), prompting notices and compliance directives. Authorities have maintained that establishments accommodating guests and the public must meet prescribed safety standards to minimise risks and ensure effective emergency response.
The current enforcement drive is expected to continue in the coming weeks as officials seek to improve compliance levels across the hospitality sector and other public-facing establishments. The focus remains on ensuring that fire prevention systems, evacuation arrangements and emergency preparedness measures are in place before any incident occurs.
