Two workers died and another person was hospitalised after a carbon dioxide (CO2) gas leak occurred during fire extinguisher maintenance work at Schaeffler India Ltd’s plant in Talegaon MIDC, Pune district, on Tuesday. The incident took place at around 12.30 pm when annual servicing of fire extinguishers was being carried out by personnel from a private contractor at the manufacturing facility.
According to police officials, three employees of the contractor and two members of Schaeffler India’s staff were engaged in the maintenance exercise when CO2 gas leaked from a fire extinguisher cylinder. The leak exposed those present at the site to the gas, resulting in serious consequences for some of the workers involved in the operation.
Police said two individuals were critically affected by the gas exposure and subsequently died. Another person was admitted to hospital and was reported to be in a stable condition while undergoing treatment.
Authorities are continuing to gather details regarding the identities of the victims and the circumstances that led to the incident. Police officials stated that they were awaiting further information from the hospital as part of the ongoing inquiry.
An Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been registered in connection with the incident. Investigators have initiated further proceedings to determine how the gas leak occurred and whether any procedural or safety lapses contributed to the accident.
The maintenance work was being conducted as part of the annual servicing of fire extinguishers installed at the facility. Such inspections are routinely undertaken to ensure firefighting equipment remains operational and compliant with safety requirements.
Schaeffler India operates the Talegaon plant through its parent group, Germany-based Schaeffler Group. The company is engaged in the automotive, industrial and aerospace sectors and is listed on Indian stock exchanges.
According to information available on the company’s website, the Talegaon manufacturing unit produces engine and transmission components used in front accessory drive systems, chain drive systems, valve train applications and shift systems. The facility also manufactures a range of needle roller bearings and bearing elements supplied to the automotive industry.
The investigation is expected to focus on the sequence of events leading to the release of CO2 from the fire extinguisher cylinder, as authorities seek to establish the exact cause of the fatal workplace accident.
