The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a series of technology-driven maintenance measures across the national highway network to improve operational efficiency, road quality and user experience. The state-owned authority has adopted mechanised drain-cleaning equipment, automated pothole repair systems and advanced road-sweeping technologies as part of a broader effort to modernise highway upkeep. The initiative forms part of NHAI’s focus on preventive maintenance, sustainability and stricter enforcement of contractual obligations. According to the authority, the use of modern equipment and maintenance practices is expected to enhance the condition of highways, improve service standards and support a more efficient road management framework across the country.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has adopted mechanised maintenance technologies for the upkeep of national highways, with the objective of improving road quality, operational efficiency and the overall travel experience for highway users across the country. The measures were announced by the state-owned authority on Tuesday as part of its ongoing efforts to modernise highway maintenance and strengthen preventive upkeep practices.
Under the initiative, NHAI has introduced mechanised drain-cleaning systems, automated pothole repair equipment and advanced road-sweeping technologies across sections of the national highway network. The authority stated that the deployment of such technologies is intended to improve the efficiency and quality of maintenance operations while reducing dependence on conventional manual processes.
According to NHAI, the adoption of modern equipment forms part of a broader strategy to enhance highway asset management through technology-led interventions. The authority indicated that preventive maintenance practices would be strengthened through the use of mechanised systems capable of carrying out routine maintenance activities more effectively and consistently.
The move is also aimed at ensuring better compliance with maintenance standards by reinforcing the implementation of contractual obligations. NHAI stated that stricter monitoring and enforcement mechanisms, combined with the use of advanced maintenance technologies, would help improve service delivery across the national highway network.
The authority further noted that the mechanised drain-cleaning systems are expected to improve drainage management and reduce maintenance-related disruptions, while automated pothole-filling equipment would enable quicker repairs and help maintain road surface quality. Advanced road-sweeping technologies have also been introduced to support cleaner and better-maintained highway corridors.
NHAI said these measures are expected to contribute to higher-quality highway infrastructure, improved sustainability outcomes and a better travel experience for road users. The authority added that the adoption of mechanised drain cleaning, automatic pothole filling and advanced road-sweeping technologies would enhance operational efficiency and support a more proactive maintenance framework.
The latest initiative reflects NHAI’s continued focus on integrating technology into highway management and maintenance activities as it seeks to improve service standards and preserve the long-term quality of India’s national highway infrastructure.
