Delhi's Public Works Department (PWD) has stepped up its monsoon preparedness measures by focusing on roads and intersections that are vulnerable to waterlogging during heavy rainfall. The department has identified several critical locations across the capital and initiated corrective measures to improve drainage, reduce flooding risks and ensure smoother traffic movement during the rainy season.
The exercise includes large-scale desilting of drains, removal of accumulated debris, repair of damaged drainage infrastructure and regular inspections of road stretches that have historically witnessed severe water accumulation. Officials have been directed to complete the work in a time-bound manner to ensure that vulnerable areas are prepared before rainfall intensity increases.
Several roads under the PWD's jurisdiction experience waterlogging almost every year, leading to traffic congestion, vehicle breakdowns and inconvenience for commuters. To address these recurring issues, the department has prioritised known flooding hotspots and deployed engineering teams to assess bottlenecks in the drainage network. Corrective measures are being undertaken based on site-specific requirements, including improvements to stormwater outflow systems and drain connectivity.
Authorities are also carrying out field inspections to review the progress of ongoing maintenance work and identify locations that may require additional intervention. The focus is not only on clearing drains but also on ensuring that stormwater can flow efficiently into the city's larger drainage network during periods of intense rainfall.
The initiative comes as civic agencies across Delhi increase preparedness measures ahead of the monsoon. In recent years, heavy rainfall events have exposed gaps in urban drainage systems, resulting in flooding on major roads and disruptions to daily movement. Waterlogging has remained one of the most persistent infrastructure challenges in the capital, particularly at low-lying intersections and high-traffic corridors.
The PWD's monsoon action plan is part of broader efforts to strengthen Delhi's urban infrastructure. Along with road maintenance and drainage upgrades, authorities are focusing on preventive measures to minimise the impact of seasonal rainfall on transportation networks. Improved coordination between departments responsible for roads, drains and civic services is also expected to support faster responses during heavy rain events.
Officials believe that early intervention and continuous monitoring will help reduce water accumulation at vulnerable locations and improve road safety during the monsoon. The department is expected to keep reviewing hotspot areas throughout the season and undertake additional measures wherever required to prevent major disruptions.
