Synopsis

• The proposed 207.8-km Ramagundam-Manuguru railway line has received key approvals and will be developed at an estimated cost of INR 5,818.45 crore.
• The project will connect coal-producing, industrial and tribal regions across Telangana, improving both passenger and freight movement.
• The new corridor is expected to reduce travel distance between Ramagundam and Manuguru by nearly 90 km while enhancing connectivity to remote districts.
• The railway line is likely to strengthen logistics for coal transportation, support industrial growth and improve access to important locations such as Medaram.
• Authorities are targeting completion of the project within the next five years, including land acquisition and construction activities.

The proposed Ramagundam-Manuguru railway line is expected to become one of Telangana's most significant rail infrastructure projects, improving regional connectivity while supporting industrial and economic activity across multiple districts. The 207.8-km railway corridor, estimated to cost INR 5,818.45 crore, has received key approvals and will be developed under the public-private partnership (PPP) model.
The rail line will connect Ramagundam in Peddapalli district with Manuguru in Bhadradri Kothagudem district, creating a direct rail link between two important coal and industrial belts of the state. The route is planned to pass through Manthani, Bhupalpally, Chityal, Ghanpur, Medaram, Tadvai and Gopalraopeta, bringing railway connectivity to several areas that currently have limited access to the rail network.
The project has been under discussion for more than two decades and has gained momentum following approvals from the Ministry of Railways and progress on land acquisition requirements. State and central authorities are now working towards implementing the project, with completion targeted within the next five years.
A major objective of the railway line is to improve freight transportation in a region that plays a critical role in Telangana's mining and power sectors. Both Ramagundam and Manuguru are closely linked to coal production, thermal power generation and industrial activity. The proposed direct rail corridor is expected to facilitate faster movement of coal, raw materials and industrial goods, reducing transportation costs and improving logistics efficiency for industries operating in the region.
The project is also expected to benefit the operations of Singareni Collieries, one of the state's largest coal producers. Improved rail connectivity will help strengthen evacuation and transportation of coal from mining regions to power plants and industrial consumers, supporting the broader energy ecosystem of Telangana.
Apart from freight movement, the railway line is expected to significantly improve passenger connectivity. At present, travellers moving between Ramagundam and Manuguru often rely on longer routes through existing railway junctions. The new line is expected to shorten travel distance by around 90 km, reducing travel time and providing a more direct connection between northern and eastern parts of Telangana.
The corridor is likely to provide a major boost to districts such as Mulugu, Jayashankar Bhupalpally and Bhadradri Kothagudem, where railway infrastructure remains limited. Better connectivity could improve access to education, healthcare, employment centres and government services for residents in these regions.
The proposed route will also improve accessibility to Medaram, home to the Sammakka-Saralamma Jatara, one of the largest tribal festivals in the country. Improved rail connectivity is expected to support the movement of devotees and visitors during the event while strengthening tourism-related infrastructure in the region.
Industry observers believe the railway line could emerge as an important logistics corridor by connecting mineral-rich areas, industrial clusters and emerging economic centres. The project is also expected to provide an alternative route for freight movement, helping reduce pressure on existing rail corridors and improving overall network efficiency.
The Ramagundam–Manuguru railway line forms part of a wider push to expand railway infrastructure in Telangana. Over the past few years, the state has witnessed increased investments in new railway lines, track doubling projects and capacity enhancement works aimed at strengthening connectivity, supporting industrial development and improving freight movement across the region.
