The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has received the ‘Excellence in Renewable Energy-Led Urban Governance’ award at the Maharashtra Energy Expo Awards 2026 in recognition of its initiatives in renewable energy and sustainable urban development. The award, presented by Solar Quarter, acknowledges the civic body's implementation of solar power projects across public infrastructure, large-scale deployment of solar and LED street lighting, and energy conservation measures. NMMC has installed solar energy systems across 25 public buildings and 50 public facilities, generating over 350,000 units of renewable energy annually. The recognition also highlights the corporation's upcoming 100 MW floating solar project at Morbe Dam, which is expected to significantly expand clean energy generation and support long-term sustainability objectives.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has been honoured with the ‘Excellence in Renewable Energy-Led Urban Governance’ award at the Maharashtra Energy Expo Awards 2026 for its contribution to renewable energy adoption and sustainable urban development. The recognition was conferred by Solar Quarter, a recognised organisation in the renewable energy sector, during a ceremony held in Nagpur in the past week.
The award was received by Praveen Gade, Executive Engineer of NMMC's Electrical Department, from Sarang Mahajan, Regional Director of the Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MEDA), in the presence of Deputy Engineer Santosh Moraskar. Following the recognition, Mayor Sujata Patil and Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde congratulated City Engineer Shirish Ardawad and the Electrical Department for their efforts in advancing renewable energy initiatives across the city.
The award acknowledges NMMC's work in integrating renewable energy into municipal operations and promoting energy-efficient urban infrastructure. Over the past several years, the civic body has implemented a series of clean energy projects and awareness programmes aimed at supporting sustainable development and reducing dependence on conventional energy sources.
As part of these efforts, NMMC has installed solar power systems across 25 public buildings and 50 public utility facilities. Additional solar projects are currently under implementation. According to the civic body, these installations generate more than 350,000 units of renewable energy annually and have contributed to energy savings exceeding 4,500 MWh. The projects collectively represent an installed capacity of around 1.2 MW.
The municipal corporation has also undertaken a large-scale transition towards energy-efficient public lighting infrastructure. More than 51,000 solar-powered and LED-based streetlights have been installed across the city, resulting in lower energy consumption, reduced maintenance and repair expenditure, and a decline in carbon emissions. Officials stated that the upgraded lighting network has also enhanced public safety in several areas.
Citizen participation has formed a key component of the city's sustainability strategy. NMMC has organised training workshops, seminars and street plays to increase awareness of renewable energy, energy conservation and sustainable living practices among residents and other stakeholders.
The corporation is now preparing to undertake one of its most ambitious renewable energy projects through the development of a 100 MW floating solar power plant at Morbe Dam. The project will be implemented under a public-private partnership (PPP) model and is expected to generate approximately 135 million units of clean energy annually during its first phase of operation.
According to the municipal corporation, the floating solar project is expected to reduce electricity expenditure, lower carbon emissions and contribute towards national clean energy targets. Officials indicated that the initiative will play a significant role in advancing Navi Mumbai's long-term objective of achieving greater energy self-sufficiency and environmental sustainability.
The latest recognition adds to a series of state, national and international awards received by NMMC across different public service sectors and highlights the growing role of renewable energy in shaping urban infrastructure and municipal governance strategies.
