The Delhi government has commenced a major sewer infrastructure project worth INR 138 crore in North East Delhi's Karawal Nagar constituency, aiming to address long-standing sanitation and civic infrastructure deficiencies. Announced by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta alongside Union Minister of State and Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra, the project will expand sewer connectivity across localities including Sonia Vihar, Milan Garden, Chauhan Patti and Sabhapur Extension. The initiative forms part of a broader package of development works exceeding INR 300 crore approved for the constituency over the past year. Besides strengthening sewer infrastructure, the government has outlined plans for water supply improvements, road upgrades and healthcare facilities as part of a wider push to improve urban services in the area.
The Delhi government has launched a sewer infrastructure project worth INR 138 crore in Karawal Nagar, seeking to improve sanitation services and address longstanding civic challenges in several parts of North East Delhi. The project was announced during a public meeting held in the past week by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Union Minister of State and Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra, with work on the sewer network already underway.
The sewer development scheme will cover key localities including Sonia Vihar, Milan Garden, Chauhan Patti, Sabhapur Extension and adjoining areas. According to the chief minister, the project is intended to accelerate sewer infrastructure development in neighbourhoods that have faced persistent issues related to drainage, wastewater management and basic civic services.
Gupta stated that development projects worth more than INR 300 crore have been approved in the Karawal Nagar Assembly constituency during the past year through the Chief Minister's Development Fund, MLA Fund and the Yamuna Paar Development Board. She indicated that the government is focusing on creating permanent solutions to infrastructure deficiencies rather than short-term measures.
As part of the wider infrastructure programme, old water pipelines are being replaced, ageing sewer systems are being cleaned through mechanised methods and efforts are underway to improve drinking water supply across the constituency. The chief minister also highlighted ongoing road and drainage works in several locations and said the government would pursue the widening and beautification of the road connecting Signature Bridge and Pushta Road in coordination with relevant agencies.
The government has additionally announced social infrastructure measures for the area. Three Atal canteens have already become operational in the constituency, while approvals have been granted for three Arogya Mandirs to strengthen healthcare services for residents. Gupta also indicated that demands for a new hospital in the region would be examined.
Speaking at the event, Malhotra said the sewer project would complement broader efforts to improve civic infrastructure across North East Delhi. Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh stated that work had begun on expanding sewer connectivity in the constituency and noted that inadequate sewer infrastructure had historically contributed to wastewater discharge into the Yamuna. He said the ongoing programme includes the laying of sewer lines across multiple colonies in Karawal Nagar.
The announcement comes amid a wider push by the Delhi government to strengthen water and sewer infrastructure across the capital through new investments in treatment facilities, pipeline replacement projects and local sewer network expansion. The Karawal Nagar project is expected to form part of these broader efforts aimed at improving urban infrastructure and sanitation services in underserved areas of the city.
