The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) marked World Environment Day by inaugurating a plastic bottle crusher machine at its headquarters and unveiling a series of environmental initiatives aimed at promoting waste segregation and plastic reduction. Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde urged civic officials and employees to act as ambassadors for cleanliness and environmental protection, encouraging the use of cloth bags and source-level waste segregation. The bottle crusher machine, installed through a CSR partnership involving Atos, Rotary Club and Biocrux, rewards citizens for recycling plastic bottles. NMMC also announced plans to install 12 such machines across hospitals and markets, while introducing school-based tree nurseries and a seed bank programme to strengthen environmental awareness among younger generations.
Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has launched a plastic bottle crusher machine at its headquarters as part of its World Environment Day initiatives, while also outlining plans to expand environmental awareness and waste management programmes across the city.
The machine was inaugurated by Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde during a special programme organised at the NMMC headquarters. Addressing municipal officers and employees, Dr Shinde emphasised that the success of any public initiative depends on how sincerely it is adopted from the outset. He urged civic staff to prioritise waste segregation at the source, promote the use of cloth bags instead of plastic carry bags and actively contribute towards reducing plastic waste.
Dr Shinde stated that every employee of the municipal corporation serves as a brand ambassador for cleanliness and environmental protection. He called upon officials and staff members to take a proactive role in advancing the city's cleanliness objectives and enforcing measures aimed at reducing plastic usage. He further encouraged employees to function as “plastic marshals” by spreading awareness and encouraging responsible waste disposal practices.
The plastic bottle crusher machine has been installed at a prominent location on the ground floor of the civic headquarters building. The initiative has been implemented through Atos’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding in collaboration with Rotary Club and Biocrux.
Under the system, citizens can deposit plastic bottles into the machine and enter their mobile number using the keypad provided. Upon completing the process, users receive a congratulatory message on their mobile phones along with two reward points for participating in an environmentally responsible activity. Accumulated points can later be redeemed for useful products through Smart Bazaar once a specified threshold is reached.
According to the civic administration, 12 similar machines are proposed to be installed at high-footfall locations across the city, including municipal hospitals and markets, to encourage greater public participation in plastic waste recycling.
The programme was attended by Additional Commissioners Sunil Pawar and Dr Rahul Gethe, Deputy Commissioner of Solid Waste Management Dr Ajay Gadde, Zone 1 Deputy Commissioner Somnath Potre, Education Department Deputy Commissioner Sangharatna Khillare, Sports Department Deputy Commissioner Abhilasha Patil, Medical Health Officer Dr Rajesh Mhatre, Chief Legal Officer Abhay Jadhav, Biocrux Director Ajay Mishra, Manager Rounak Thakur, Rotary Club President Prashant Patro, along with other municipal officials and employees.
In addition to the recycling initiative, NMMC announced plans to establish tree nurseries in schools and introduce a “Seed Bank” programme. The initiative aims to foster environmental awareness among students and encourage greater participation in ecological conservation efforts from an early age.
The civic administration indicated that similar environmental programmes would be implemented on a larger scale across the city. The event concluded with a collective pledge under the “Majhi Vasundhara” campaign, reaffirming the municipal corporation’s commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible resource management.
