Navi Mumbai Mayor Sujata Patil conducted a review of the water supply situation in Ghansoli, Airoli and Digha following the restoration of services after a three-day shutdown. While complaints regarding muddy water have reduced significantly, the mayor inspected water samples collected from households and interacted with residents and elected representatives to assess supply quality. Concerns were raised regarding water supplied by MIDC, ageing pipelines in gaothan and slum areas, and water wastage across the city. Patil suggested regular testing of MIDC water and the establishment of a dedicated water treatment facility in Digha. She also urged citizens to conserve water as Morbe Dam's storage level has fallen to 14.94 per cent and directed action against unauthorised use of potable water at construction sites.
Navi Mumbai Mayor Sujata Patil reviewed the water supply and quality situation in Ghansoli, Airoli and Digha following the restoration of normal services after a three-day shutdown, amid concerns regarding water quality, ageing infrastructure and declining reservoir levels.
During her visit, Patil interacted with local corporators and residents and inspected water samples collected from households across the three localities. She stated that complaints relating to muddy water had reduced considerably following the resumption of regular supply and that feedback received from public representatives and citizens indicated that the situation was gradually returning to normal.
Over the past week, the mayor and deputy mayor have been inspecting water quality at multiple points, from Morbe Dam to the city's main water transmission network, along with local elected representatives. As part of the latest review, Patil visited the Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial in Airoli and held discussions with residents and corporators regarding the prevailing water situation.
The inspection was attended by F Ward Committee Chairperson Lalita Madhvi, corporators Manoj Haldankar, Shivaji Khopde, Anjana Mhatre, Reshma Madhvi, Shreya Jirge, Gauri Angre, Chandani Chougule, Advocate Aparna Gavte and Bandu Keni, along with Additional City Engineer Arvind Shinde, Executive Engineers Shankar Jadhav and Santosh Unavane, and other municipal officials.
During the interaction, corporators raised concerns regarding the quality of water supplied by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) in parts of Ghansoli, Airoli and Digha. In response, Patil directed that MIDC water samples should undergo regular testing. She also suggested establishing a compact water treatment facility in Digha for water received from MIDC, similar to the civic body's Bhokarpada Water Treatment Plant. According to the mayor, such a facility would help verify the adequacy of water supplied by MIDC while ensuring that residents receive properly treated water.
Elected representatives also highlighted issues related to ageing water pipelines in gaothan areas and informal settlements. Many of the pipelines have reportedly corroded over time and developed leakages, while several sections pass through drains, leading to concerns about contamination. Patil suggested replacing old pipelines and laying them within dedicated utility ducts separated from drainage lines to minimise the risk of contamination.
The mayor also expressed concern over the city's water reserves. She stated that Morbe Dam currently has a water level of 71.16 metres, with only 14.94 per cent of its storage remaining. While Navi Mumbai is not facing a severe water crisis like some other cities, she urged residents to use water judiciously to avoid future shortages. Referring to weather forecasts indicating a delayed monsoon and below-normal rainfall, Patil emphasised the need to conserve available water resources until reservoir levels improve.
Residents and corporators further pointed to water wastage through vehicle washing and the use of motor pumps to draw excessive quantities of water. Concerns were also raised regarding the use of potable water at construction sites. The mayor directed officials to inspect such cases and take immediate action wherever violations are found.
She also ordered strict action against developers found misusing municipal water connections that are provided specifically for workers' welfare at construction sites. In addition, following complaints regarding frequent power outages in Airoli affecting water supply operations, Patil said a joint meeting would be organised between public representatives and Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) officials.
The mayor also reminded citizens that NMMC has operationalised a toll-free water grievance helpline, 1800222309, and encouraged residents to report complaints. She said civic staff would visit affected locations, resolve issues and conduct water quality checks wherever necessary.
