Delhi authorities have intensified action against unauthorised constructions and misuse of premises across the national capital in the wake of the deadly fire at a bed-and-breakfast facility in Hauz Rani that killed 21 people, including several foreign nationals.
According to official information reported by PTI and ET Realty, demolition action has been carried out against 82 properties and 43 others have been sealed since June 1 as part of a citywide enforcement drive. The operation is being undertaken under the directions of Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
The crackdown comes amid heightened scrutiny of illegal constructions and building safety standards following the June 3 fire tragedy. Authorities have been conducting inspections across all municipal zones to identify properties involved in unauthorised construction activities, deviations from sanctioned plans and misuse of premises.
Officials stated that the exercise is aimed at improving compliance with building regulations and addressing violations that could pose risks to public safety. The action covers a range of properties where construction norms, land-use regulations or approval conditions have allegedly been breached.
The enforcement campaign is being carried out by civic authorities in coordination with other government agencies. Properties found violating regulations are facing demolition, sealing or other legal action depending on the nature and extent of the violations.
The Hauz Rani incident has renewed concerns over the safety of buildings operating without adequate adherence to approved plans and regulatory requirements. Authorities have stressed that the current drive is not limited to a single locality and will continue across Delhi to ensure stricter compliance with urban development and safety norms.
Officials have indicated that further inspections are underway and additional action may follow against properties found violating applicable regulations. The government views the ongoing exercise as part of a broader effort to strengthen oversight, improve accountability and prevent future tragedies linked to illegal construction and unsafe building practices.
