Synopsis

• Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has accelerated the digitisation of land and ownership records in five villages under the NAKSHA pilot project.
• Officials have been directed to complete pending work within the stipulated timeline after a review of the project's progress.
• Villages covered under the initiative include Sarangpur, Attawa, Burail, Kajheri and Palsora, where field verification work has largely been completed.
• More than 13,000 properties have been mapped and verified as part of Chandigarh's broader GIS-based land records programme.
• The project is expected to improve transparency, reduce land ownership disputes and strengthen urban and village planning through accurate digital records.

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has intensified efforts to complete the digitisation of land and ownership records in village abadi areas under the National Geospatial Knowledge-based Land Survey of Urban Habitations (NAKSHA) project. The initiative is aimed at creating accurate digital land records and strengthening property management through technology-driven governance.
The progress of the project was reviewed recently by Joint Commissioner Dr Inder Jeet, who held a meeting with officials from the State Project Management Unit and the engineering department. During the review, officials assessed the status of surveys, ownership verification and digital record preparation in the selected villages. The Joint Commissioner directed all concerned teams to expedite the remaining work and ensure that the project is completed within the prescribed timeline while maintaining the accuracy of records.
The NAKSHA pilot project is currently being implemented in five villages of Chandigarh — Sarangpur, Attawa, Burail, Kajheri and Palsora. The programme focuses on preparing detailed digital land records by combining field surveys, ownership verification and geospatial mapping. Once completed, residents will have access to more reliable property records, while government departments will benefit from a unified digital database.
Officials associated with the project indicated that field verification activities have already been completed in the selected villages and the focus has now shifted towards finalising and integrating the data. The digitisation process is expected to provide greater clarity on property ownership and land boundaries, which have historically been a source of disputes in many urban villages.
The initiative forms part of Chandigarh's larger effort to modernise land administration and property record management. Under the broader GIS-based land records programme, more than 13,000 properties across urban sectors and village areas have already been mapped and verified. The exercise is helping authorities build a comprehensive digital repository of land information that can be updated and maintained more efficiently than conventional records.
The project also aligns with the administration's wider digitisation drive. In recent months, Chandigarh has undertaken large-scale scanning and digitisation of legacy property records across departments to reduce dependency on physical documents and improve access to information. Officials believe the integration of geospatial mapping with ownership records will strengthen transparency and make land-related services more efficient.
Being implemented by the Department of Land Resources under the Government of India, the NAKSHA project is designed to create modern, technology-enabled land administration systems across urban habitations. In Chandigarh, the initiative is expected to support better planning, streamline record management and provide a stronger foundation for future development and infrastructure projects.
