Ghaziabad to crack down on 258 illegal colonies along Hindon River over sewage pollution concerns

Synopsis

• Ghaziabad administration is preparing a large-scale eviction and demolition drive against 258 illegal colonies located along the Hindon River.
• The action follows submissions made before the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which highlighted that these unauthorised colonies were discharging untreated sewage into the river.
• District authorities have directed multiple departments to identify encroachments, verify land records and initiate enforcement measures.
• The drive is aimed at protecting the Hindon River, preventing further encroachment on floodplain areas and improving environmental compliance.
• Officials expect the exercise to strengthen urban planning controls and curb the growth of unauthorised developments in the district.

The Ghaziabad administration is set to begin a major eviction and demolition drive against illegal colonies located along the Hindon River after concerns were raised over untreated sewage being discharged into the water body.
The proposed action comes after the Uttar Pradesh government informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that 258 unauthorised colonies in Ghaziabad were releasing untreated sewage into the Hindon River. The issue has brought renewed attention to the growing pressure on the river from unplanned urban development and encroachments along its banks.
District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar Mandar has directed officials from the revenue department, local bodies and other concerned agencies to jointly identify illegal colonies and encroachments situated near the river. Authorities have also been asked to verify land ownership records and prepare action plans for removing unauthorised structures found to be violating planning and environmental norms.
According to officials, the exercise will focus on colonies developed without necessary approvals and those contributing to pollution of the river. The administration is expected to carry out detailed surveys before initiating demolition and eviction measures.
The Hindon River has remained one of the most polluted rivers in western Uttar Pradesh for several years. Environmental agencies have repeatedly flagged the discharge of untreated sewage, industrial waste and solid waste into the river. Encroachments on floodplain land have also emerged as a major concern, affecting the river's natural flow and reducing its ability to absorb excess water during periods of heavy rainfall.
Authorities have been undertaking similar enforcement actions across Ghaziabad in recent years to tackle illegal constructions and unauthorised developments. Several demolition drives have been carried out against structures built on government land, green zones and floodplain areas. The Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) has also maintained records of unauthorised colonies and has previously issued warnings against purchasing properties in such developments.
Officials believe that unchecked growth of illegal colonies has not only created environmental challenges but has also placed additional pressure on civic infrastructure, including drainage, sanitation and waste management systems. The latest drive is expected to address both environmental and planning violations in the affected areas.
The administration has indicated that enforcement measures will be taken after completion of surveys and verification exercises. Departments involved in the operation have been asked to coordinate closely to ensure effective implementation and prevent further encroachments along the river corridor.
The planned action is part of broader efforts by authorities to improve the condition of the Hindon River and ensure that future development in the district takes place in accordance with approved land-use regulations and environmental standards. With urban expansion continuing across Ghaziabad, officials are increasingly focusing on protecting ecologically sensitive areas from unauthorised construction and pollution-related activities.
