Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL) has received approval from Bidhannagar Police to begin construction work on a crucial 120-metre viaduct gap on VIP Road for Kolkata Metro’s Orange Line project connecting New Garia and the airport. The pending work near Kaikhali and Haj House had remained delayed for a long period because of traffic movement concerns and construction permissions. The latest approval comes shortly after progress at Chingrighata, where another important viaduct gap was bridged on the corridor. With multiple pending sections now moving ahead, authorities are looking to speed up construction on the remaining stretches of the Kolkata Airport Metro route.
Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL) has secured clearance to begin work on a 120-metre viaduct gap along VIP Road, a major pending section of Kolkata Metro’s Orange Line corridor connecting New Garia with the airport. The approval from Bidhannagar Police is expected to help accelerate construction near Kaikhali and Haj House, where metro work had remained stalled because of traffic management and movement-related permissions.
The work will involve deploying a nearly 500-tonne launching structure and installing six concrete spans between piers 826 and 832 on VIP Road. Authorities have reportedly allowed traffic diversion during night hours between 11 pm and 5 am to support the construction process. The work on this stretch is expected to continue for nearly four months.
RVNL had already completed seven piers in the area, including three portal pillars, but the final viaduct construction could not move ahead without police approval. The latest permission is expected to remove one of the key bottlenecks on the Kolkata Airport Metro corridor.
The development follows recent progress at Chingrighata, where RVNL completed the first phase of deck-launching work to bridge another important viaduct gap on the Orange Line route. The agency had launched a 28-metre concrete deck between piers 317 and 318 after receiving approval for a temporary traffic block on the EM Bypass. The work had reportedly remained delayed for more than a year due to pending traffic permissions and diversion planning.
The Chingrighata section is considered important for improving Metro connectivity between Beleghata and Sector V. RVNL is expected to begin the second phase of deck-launching activity shortly to complete the remaining span between piers 318 and 319. Authorities had also developed a nearly 500-metre diversion road to manage traffic during the construction period.
The Orange Line Metro project has witnessed repeated delays over the years because of land acquisition challenges, traffic restrictions and pending construction approvals at several locations. While civil work on many stretches had been substantially completed, a few critical gaps prevented full corridor connectivity and delayed trial runs on extended sections.
Earlier, authorities had also focused on bridging pending viaduct gaps near Tagore Park and Metropolitan crossing to support future operations on the New Garia-Airport Metro route. Several portions of the corridor are already operational, while the remaining sections towards Sector V and the airport are still under construction.
Afcons Infrastructure, which is handling the final stretch between City Centre II and the airport, had also faced delays because work permissions on busy traffic corridors were not available on time. The remaining section includes elevated stations near Chinar Park and VIP Road along with an underground stretch close to the airport.
The latest approvals for the VIP Road section are expected to help speed up execution on one of the most delayed portions of the Kolkata Metro Orange Line project, which is expected to improve connectivity between south Kolkata, Sector V and the airport region.
