#Law & Policy#India#Tamil Nadu
Synopsis

The Coimbatore City Corporation has implemented measures to expedite the processing of building plan applications and reduce delays in granting approvals to residents. Previously, the process took a month, leading to a backlog of pending applications. The corporation commissioner has allocated specific timeframes for officials involved in the process and introduced digital monitoring to ensure timely completion. Significant progress has been made, with 300 pending applications cleared in a week, including those pending for over a month. These efforts aim to streamline procedures and provide residents with faster building plan approvals, enhancing urban development in the city.

The city corporation has instructed its assistant engineers to process building plan applications within five to six days to address the delay in granting approvals to residents. Previously, the processing time took a full month, resulting in numerous pending applications. The corporation commissioner has allocated specific timeframes for different officials involved in the process, and digital monitoring will ensure timely completion. Recent progress has been made with 300 pending applications cleared in a week, including those pending for over a month. These efforts aim to streamline procedures and expedite building plan approvals for improved urban development.

The Coimbatore city corporation has issued a directive to its assistant engineers to expedite the processing of building plan applications in order to reduce the delay in granting approval to residents. Under normal circumstances, these applications should be processed within a month. However, the assistant engineers themselves have been taking a full 30 days to process the applications before passing them on to higher officials. As a result, a significant number of applications have remained pending even after the 30-day mark.

In light of this issue, Corporation Commissioner M Prathap has confirmed that he personally instructed the assistant engineers to process the applications within a much shorter timeframe of five to six days. He further outlined the division of responsibilities among various officials involved in the approval process. Each assistant town planning officer, town planning officer, and assistant corporation commissioner is now allocated one week to clear the files, while the deputy corporation commissioner has just two days to complete their tasks.

According to the established norms, the assistant corporation commissioner is the final authority responsible for granting approval for buildings occupying less than 2,000 square feet. On the other hand, the deputy commissioner handles the approval process for buildings occupying 2,000 to 4,000 square feet. For larger structures exceeding 4,000 square feet, the corporation commissioner himself holds the authority to grant approvals.

Town Planning Officer S Kumar reported that in the past week alone, 300 pending applications were successfully cleared. This is a notable achievement considering that the average number of applications received in a month typically ranges between 250 and 300. Of the 300 cleared applications, approximately 150 had been pending for over a month, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Kumar acknowledged that the intervention of the corporation commissioner played a crucial role in expediting the entire building plan approval process. Work at every stage has been accelerated, resulting in the significant progress witnessed recently. To ensure efficient monitoring of all applications, a digital system has been implemented to track their status. If an application is not cleared within the designated timeframe by the assistant engineers or assistant town planning engineers, they will be promptly reminded to complete the task.

This proactive approach by the city corporation demonstrates its commitment to streamlining administrative procedures and improving the overall efficiency of the building plan approval process. By reducing the time taken to process applications, residents can expect quicker responses and approvals, enabling them to proceed with their construction projects in a more timely manner. The corporation's dedication to digital monitoring and timely intervention will contribute to a smoother experience for applicants, enhancing the city's urban development in the long run.
