Synopsis

The Karnataka Revenue Department is accelerating the Bhu-Suraksha Project to digitise land records, having scanned 15.5 crore pages so far. With a goal of digitising 90 crore more pages by the end of the year, the department has issued notices to 192 tahsildars for failing to meet daily scanning targets. Officials are now required to meet their quotas by month-end. The scanned documents will be reviewed, approved, and uploaded online with digital signatures. The project aims to make land records accessible, prevent fraud, ensure long-term preservation, and provide easier public access through an online platform set to launch soon.

The Karnataka Revenue Department is accelerating work on its flagship Bhu-Suraksha Project, which aims to digitise and protect important land-related records. These include documents from the land revenue, land survey, and registration departments. The main goal is to preserve these records for the long term, make them easily accessible, and reduce the risk of fraud or document loss.

So far, the department has scanned around 15.5 crore pages of records stored in tahsildar offices. But the full target is much bigger about 90 crore more pages need to be scanned by the end of 2025. To speed things up, the department has issued notices to 192 tahsildars who are falling behind. These officials have now been asked to meet their daily scanning targets by the end of this month.

After scanning, the documents will be reviewed and approved by Shirastedars (record officers). Once approved, they will be uploaded online with digital signatures. The department plans to launch an online platform within the next two months, allowing citizens to access these digital documents directly.

Only A-Khata records (which are permanent) and B-Khata (which must be preserved for 30 years) are being scanned under this project.

The project started in February 2024 as a pilot in one taluk from each of Karnataka's 31 districts. Among these, 11 taluks including Naragunda, Chincholi, and Molakalmuru have completed their scanning work. However, Bengaluru Urban has shown poor progress, ranking 29th out of 31 taluks, with only 16.91 lakh pages scanned so far.

At present, the department receives 400-500 requests every month for scanned land records. The new digital platform is expected to make access to these records much quicker and more transparent for the public.

With the Bhu-Suraksha Project, the Karnataka Revenue Department is working to digitise land documents across the state. Despite delays in some areas, the department is taking strong steps to complete the work and launch online access to these records by the end of the year.
