The sealed building had been under scrutiny for several months. Despite receiving two notices, the owner, from a neighboring state, failed to comply. Initially, approvals were granted for two residential structures of approximately 2,499 square feet each. However, the owner constructed a larger building and repurposed it for commercial use as a tourist stay, violating the terms of the original approval.
This decisive action reflects the administration's commitment to enforcing building regulations and maintaining the district's environmental integrity.
The issue of unauthorized constructions is not unique to the Nilgiris. In the neighboring Segur plateau elephant corridor, authorities sealed 27 resorts built without proper permissions, following a Supreme Court directive aimed at protecting the migratory paths of elephants. Similarly, in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, official estimates indicate over 31,000 unauthorized buildings, with approximately 30% located in Shimla alone. These structures often violate safety and environmental standards, exacerbating the region's vulnerability to natural disasters.
The proliferation of unauthorized buildings in hill stations poses significant risks, including environmental degradation, increased landslide occurrences, and strain on local infrastructure.
