Synopsis

A Punjab Vidhan Sabha committee has recommended increasing financial aid under Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojana (PMAY-G), saying INR 1.20 lakh is insufficient to build good homes due to rising construction costs. The report highlighted that another central scheme offers INR 2 lakh for the same purpose. It urged the Punjab government to request the Centre for a higher amount. The committee also recommended involving MLAs in the selection of beneficiaries and expanding the scheme to cover more villages across the state. These measures aim to improve rural housing support and ensure eligible families receive adequate assistance for better homes.

A Punjab Vidhan Sabha committee has recommended an increase in financial assistance under the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojana (PMAY-G), stating that the current allocation of INR 1.20 lakh is insufficient for building a house. The recommendation was made in a report presented on the first day of the two-day Vidhan Sabha session. AAP MLA Buch Ram, who chairs the committee on Panchayati Raj Institutions, tabled the report, which reviewed the implementation of PMAY-G in Punjab.

PMAY-G, a central government scheme, provides INR 1.20 lakh in three installments to eligible rural beneficiaries for house construction. Punjab has been allocated a total target of 63,985 houses under the scheme. However, the report stated that constructing a proper house with this amount is difficult, especially with the rising cost of raw materials. It also highlighted that another central scheme, Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan, provides INR 2 lakh for the same purpose. Citing this disparity, the committee urged the Punjab government to push for an increase in financial aid under PMAY-G.

The report also raised concerns about the process of selecting beneficiaries. It noted that MLAs, who have direct knowledge of housing needs in their constituencies, are not consulted when survey teams visit villages to identify eligible households. The committee recommended that survey teams coordinate with local MLAs to ensure a more transparent and effective selection process. Another key issue highlighted was the exclusion of several villages from PMAY-G, leaving many eligible beneficiaries without housing support. The committee strongly recommended that all villages in Punjab be included in the survey so that no deserving household is left out.

The recommendations aim to strengthen the implementation of PMAY-G in Punjab, ensuring that financial aid is adequate and reaches those who need it most.
