The Maharashtra Real Estate Regulatory Authority (MahaRERA) has declared the results of the 6th real estate agent certification examination, which recorded a pass rate of 89%. This examination saw 6,755 of 7,624 candidates successfully qualifying, the highest number in any round held so far. Of these, 1,118 were women, while 264 senior citizens also passed. The eldest candidate to clear the examination was 84-year-old Daulatsinh Gadhvi from Mumbai. Pune's Praveen Kamble secured the top position with a score of 98%.
Cumulatively, six rounds of certification exams have been conducted, with a total of 20,125 agents certified to date. The first five rounds saw pass rates of 96%, 93%, 89%, 86%, and 87%, respectively, while the sixth surpassed all previous results in the number of successful candidates. MahaRERA has mandated that all real estate agents undergo training and secure certification, which is essential for registration or licence renewal.
This directive highlights the crucial role real estate agents play in bridging the gap between developers and homebuyers. Agents are responsible for guiding buyers through crucial aspects of property purchases, including understanding agreements for sale, defect liability periods, and carpet areas, among others. Their informed assistance ensures compliance with the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016, thereby fostering transparency and trust in the industry.
There are around 47,000 registered agents across Maharashtra. In January 2023, MahaRERA made it mandatory for real estate agents to undergo training and obtain the prescribed registration certificate. Failure to do so will result in MahaRERA suspending their registration. In May 2024, MahaRERA suspended the registration of over 20,000 agents who failed to comply with the training and certification requirements.
The authority has also issued guidelines urging homebuyers to verify credentials of agents and projects on MahaRERA's website to safeguard their investments.
MahaRERA's initiatives to enforce mandatory certification for real estate agents reflect its commitment to enhancing transparency and professionalism in the real estate sector. By empowering agents with training and knowledge, MahaRERA ensures they fulfil their critical role as intermediaries between developers and homebuyers. This approach fosters confidence in the market while promoting accountability and transparency across the real estate ecosystem.
