The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has reviewed progress on the integration of metro and monorail connectivity in eastern Mumbai, with the upcoming Chembur Metro station expected to emerge as a major multimodal interchange within the city’s expanding urban transport network. In the past week, Sanjay Mukherjee conducted a site inspection of the Chembur Metro station along with Kanhuraj Bagate to assess construction progress, commuter movement planning and operational preparedness.
Officials also visited the nearby VN Purav Monorail Station to evaluate integration between the metro corridor and the Mumbai Monorail network, which is being prepared for operational strengthening and improved connectivity.
According to MMRDA, the Chembur Metro station is expected to become an important interchange point within eastern Mumbai once operational, supporting smoother transfers between metro and monorail systems for daily commuters travelling across the eastern suburbs and South-Central Mumbai.
Authorities stated that the inspection focused on passenger convenience, seamless interchange access and system preparedness aimed at reducing travel time and improving multimodal connectivity within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The integration forms part of MMRDA’s broader strategy of developing an interconnected public transport ecosystem linking metro rail, monorail, suburban railway and road-based mobility infrastructure across Mumbai and surrounding urban corridors.
The Mumbai Monorail network, operated by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) through Mumbai Monorail Operations Company Limited (MMMOCL), connects Chembur with Jacob Circle and serves several densely populated eastern and central city locations. Transport planners have long identified interchange integration as critical for improving ridership and operational efficiency across the network.
The Chembur interchange is expected to strengthen east-west and north-south connectivity across multiple transport corridors while improving access to commercial and residential clusters in eastern Mumbai. Infrastructure experts note that integrated transit systems are increasingly becoming central to Mumbai’s long-term mobility planning due to rising commuter volumes and pressure on existing suburban railway infrastructure.
MMRDA has been accelerating work across multiple metro corridors under the Mumbai Metro expansion programme, which aims to create a large integrated rapid transit network across the metropolitan region over the coming years.
Urban infrastructure observers believe improved multimodal connectivity in eastern Mumbai could support greater commuter mobility, reduce dependency on private transport and enhance accessibility across emerging residential and commercial growth corridors linked to metro infrastructure.
