Coal India Limited has operationalised a 100 MW solar power plant in Gujarat, marking progress in its renewable energy expansion strategy. The project received commissioning certification from the Gujarat Energy Development Agency, effective at the end of FY26. The development comes as the state-owned miner works towards scaling up its clean energy portfolio, following observations by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India regarding delays in achieving its 3,000 MW solar capacity target. The move reflects ongoing efforts to diversify beyond coal-based operations and strengthen renewable energy capacity.
Coal India Limited has commissioned a 100 MW solar power plant in Gujarat, marking a step forward in its efforts to expand its renewable energy portfolio, according to a regulatory filing made in the past week. Advertisement
The company confirmed that it received a commissioning certificate from the Gujarat Energy Development Agency for the solar project, with operationalisation effective from the end of the last financial year. The development forms part of Coal India’s broader strategy to diversify its energy mix and reduce reliance on coal-based generation.
Coal India, which accounts for over 80% of India’s domestic coal production, has been working to build renewable energy capacity alongside its core mining operations. The company has outlined plans to develop a total of 3,000 MW of solar power capacity as part of its long-term transition strategy.
However, progress on this target has been slower than anticipated. In a review released earlier, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India highlighted delays in project execution, noting that the company and its subsidiaries had installed only 122.492 MW of solar capacity by the end of 2024, representing just over 4% of the stated target.
The auditor had advised Coal India to accelerate project implementation in order to align with its stated objective of transitioning towards a net-zero energy company. The commissioning of the 100 MW project in Gujarat indicates incremental progress in addressing these targets.
The solar plant is expected to contribute to grid-based renewable energy supply, supporting India’s broader objectives of increasing clean energy capacity and reducing carbon emissions. While the company continues to rely heavily on coal production, investments in renewable projects are intended to create a more balanced energy portfolio over time.
Industry observers noted that public sector enterprises in the energy sector are increasingly being encouraged to diversify into renewables, particularly in light of national energy transition goals and climate commitments.
The Gujarat project represents one of the initial large-scale solar installations by Coal India and is expected to be followed by additional capacity additions across different states. The company has been exploring both ground-mounted solar projects and other renewable energy opportunities to expand its footprint.
The commissioning also highlights the role of state agencies such as the Gujarat Energy Development Agency in facilitating renewable energy deployment through approvals and certification processes.
Coal India’s renewable energy expansion is expected to progress in phases, with future projects likely to be aligned with both internal targets and national energy policies.
