The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has approved the grant of urban status to 48 villages in the national capital, paving the way for formal civic infrastructure development in these areas. The decision, taken in the past week, is expected to facilitate the provision of municipal services such as roads, drainage, water supply and sanitation. The move aims to integrate these villages into Delhi’s urban planning framework, allowing regulated development and improved service delivery. Officials indicated that the reclassification will support infrastructure investment and align these areas with statutory urban governance norms.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) stated in the past week that it has approved the conversion of 48 villages into urban areas, a move that will bring these settlements under the formal municipal framework and enable the rollout of civic infrastructure and services. Advertisement
The decision allows the identified villages to transition from rural to urban classification, making them eligible for municipal services including road development, drainage systems, water supply networks and sanitation facilities. Officials indicated that the change in status is intended to address infrastructure gaps and improve living conditions in areas that have witnessed rapid population growth and urbanisation.
With the revised classification, these villages will now be governed under urban planning and development regulations applicable within the MCD’s jurisdiction. This includes adherence to building norms, land-use controls and property taxation systems, which were previously not fully enforced in these areas.
Authorities noted that the inclusion of these villages within the urban framework will also facilitate planned development and help curb unauthorised construction. The move is expected to streamline service delivery by enabling coordinated planning across departments responsible for civic infrastructure and maintenance.
The decision follows a review of settlement patterns and infrastructure requirements in peripheral areas of Delhi, where traditional village structures have gradually evolved into densely populated urban clusters. Officials stated that formal recognition as urban areas will allow better allocation of resources and prioritisation of infrastructure projects.
The transition is also expected to improve access to government schemes and institutional financing, as residents in these areas will be brought within the formal municipal system. Planning authorities indicated that the process will be implemented in phases, with coordination required across multiple agencies to upgrade infrastructure in line with urban standards.
The reclassification aligns with broader efforts to strengthen urban governance and ensure that expanding settlements are integrated into the city’s planning framework. By granting urban status to these villages, the MCD aims to support structured development while addressing long-standing deficiencies in civic amenities.
