• The Maharashtra government has approved around INR 104.48 crore for land acquisition for the proposed greenfield airport in Gadchiroli district.
• The airport project will be developed across four villages in Chamorshi taluka with more than 311 hectares identified for acquisition.
• Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) has been appointed as the nodal agency for implementation of the project.
• The proposed airport is expected to improve regional air connectivity and support upcoming industrial and mining investments in eastern Maharashtra.
• The project has also faced resistance from some local farmers over concerns related to land acquisition and livelihood impact.
The Maharashtra government has approved financial and administrative sanction of nearly INR 104.48 crore for land acquisition linked to the proposed greenfield airport project in Gadchiroli district. The decision marks another step in the state’s efforts to strengthen infrastructure and connectivity in eastern Maharashtra, where several industrial and mining-related projects are being planned.
The proposed airport will come up in Chamorshi taluka and will cover land spread across Shirapur Chak, Guruwala, Hirapur and Rakhi villages. Around 311.81 hectares has been identified for the development, including private land, forest land and government-owned land. The Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) will oversee the implementation and acquisition process for the project.
Out of the total approved amount, around INR 76.99 crore has been allocated for acquisition of nearly 245.75 hectares of private land. Another INR 10.07 crore has been earmarked for diversion of about 34.68 hectares of forest land required for the airport project. The remaining amount includes administrative expenses, project execution charges and provisions related to possible future escalation in acquisition costs. Around 31.38 hectares of government land will also be transferred for the project without any additional acquisition cost.
The proposal received approval from the empowered committee chaired by the Maharashtra chief secretary during a meeting held in the past week. Following the clearance, the General Administration Department issued the government resolution for implementation of the acquisition process. Officials had earlier evaluated multiple locations before selecting the Chamorshi site for the airport.
The airport project is expected to improve regional air connectivity in Gadchiroli, which has traditionally faced infrastructure and transport limitations because of its remote location. Improved connectivity is likely to support industrial movement and business activity as the district continues to attract investments linked to mining, steel production and related infrastructure sectors.
In the past year, the Maharashtra government has announced multiple projects for Gadchiroli, including road expansion works, mining-linked transport corridors and industrial proposals. The district has increasingly been positioned as an emerging industrial zone because of its mineral reserves and planned manufacturing investments. Officials believe the airport could support long-term economic activity and improve accessibility for businesses and investors entering the region.
At the same time, the land acquisition process has faced opposition from some local residents and farmers in affected villages. Reports from the area indicated that some villagers had raised concerns regarding loss of agricultural land and the impact on livelihoods. During earlier survey activities, local protests were also reported in parts of the proposed project area. The administration is expected to continue discussions with affected landowners as the acquisition process moves ahead.
The Gadchiroli airport proposal is also part of Maharashtra’s broader regional aviation expansion plans being pursued through MADC. The state is currently focusing on improving connectivity through new airport projects and upgrades in several regions to support industrial growth and passenger movement outside major urban centres.
