A regional aircraft operated by Air Canada Express was involved in an on-ground collision with a vehicle at New York's LaGuardia Airport, leading to temporary closure and operational disruption. The aircraft, arriving from Montreal, struck a fire truck at low speed, causing visible damage to its nose. Reports indicated that four individuals, including the pilots, were injured. The aircraft, identified as a CRJ-900 and arriving from Montreal, reportedly struck the vehicle at a speed of around 39 kmph, based on data from flight tracking platform Flightradar24. The collision occurred late at night, shortly before the aircraft completed its landing sequence.
Visuals captured after the accident showed noticeable structural damage to the nose section of the aircraft, with the front portion slightly tilted upward, indicating the impact force despite the relatively low speed.
According to a report by NBC News, four individuals sustained injuries in the incident. This included the pilot and co-pilot, who were reported to be seriously injured. Two personnel present in the ground vehicle a fire truck operated by police officials also suffered fractures but were stated to be in stable condition and receiving medical care.
No official confirmation on the injuries was immediately issued by authorities. Emergency response teams, including the New York Fire Department, attended the scene following reports of a collision on one of the airport's runways involving an aircraft and a vehicle.
The Federal Aviation Administration indicated that airport operations were suspended for several hours following the incident. During this period, inbound flights were diverted to alternate airports, while some flights were returned to their origin points, leading to widespread disruption for passengers.
The aircraft involved was operated by Jazz Aviation, a regional partner of Air Canada, which functions under Chorus Aviation. The CRJ-900 model used in this operation has a seating capacity of up to 76 passengers. Reports suggested that the flight was carrying 76 passengers along with four crew members at the time of the incident.
Authorities including the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are expected to review the incident. However, no immediate statements were issued by the airline or regulatory bodies regarding the cause.
New York City's emergency notification system alerted residents and commuters about possible traffic congestion, road closures, and delays around the airport area due to ongoing emergency operations.
LaGuardia Airport remains one of the key aviation hubs in the United States, handling over 30 million passengers annually, as per data from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The incident is likely to bring renewed focus on ground handling protocols and safety coordination at high-traffic airports.
