Synopsis

Melbourne Airport has announced a USD 4.5 billion expansion of its international terminal following record passenger growth. The airport recently handled more than 1.26 million international travellers in a single month, the highest in its history. The project will expand check-in, baggage claim and border processing areas, add five new gates and additional aircraft stands, and increase lounge and retail space. Planned in stages, the development will be privately funded and delivered while the airport remains operational, aligning with broader infrastructure upgrades including the third runway.

Melbourne Airport has confirmed plans to undertake a large expansion of its international terminal, committing USD 4.5 billion towards upgrading and increasing capacity at the gateway. The decision follows a record period of international travel, with the airport handling more than 1.26 million international passengers in a single month, the highest monthly figure ever recorded at the facility.

The expansion will focus on enlarging the existing international terminal building to manage growing demand and improve passenger movement. Key components include expanding check-in areas, increasing baggage reclaim capacity, and enhancing border and security processing zones. The airport will also add five new gates connected to the current international pier, along with additional aircraft parking stands designed to accommodate both widebody and narrowbody aircraft.

Airport management indicated that the works are necessary to ensure the facility keeps pace with sustained international traffic growth and airline expansion. The development is expected to provide airlines with greater operational flexibility while improving processing efficiency during peak travel periods.

Passenger amenities will also be upgraded. Plans include increasing lounge capacity, expanding retail and food outlets, and improving waiting areas to reduce congestion. These changes are aimed at improving overall passenger flow rather than introducing luxury features.

The project will be delivered in stages so that airport operations continue without disruption. Early enabling works are expected to align with the completion of a new road network for pick-up and drop-off access scheduled for later this year. The expansion also complements other long-term infrastructure plans at the airport, including the construction of a third runway, which is targeted to open in the early 2030s.

Melbourne Airport has been progressively upgrading its infrastructure over the past few years, including improvements to baggage systems and terminal facilities. The current expansion forms part of a broader strategy to prepare the airport for sustained international growth over the coming decades.
