Mumbai's Metro 6, connecting Andheri (W) to Vikhroli, is expected to begin operations around October 2026 without waiting for the Kanjurmarg car depot. MMRDA plans to use an elevated eight-lane corridor with pit lines at Vikhroli for routine rake maintenance, while major overhauls will be handled at the Mandale depot. The Kanjurmarg depot, with a cost of INR 509 crore, will include workshops, stabling lines, and an operations centre, but is delayed due to land procedures. Initially, six to eight rakes will run at intervals of six to eight minutes along the 15.31-km corridor.
Mumbai's Metro 6, stretching from Swami Samarth Nagar in Andheri (W) to Vikhroli, is set to begin operations around October 2026, even though the proposed car depot at Kanjurmarg will not be ready. To avoid delays, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has devised an innovative approach: an elevated eight-lane corridor with pit lines at Vikhroli for rake maintenance until the depot is constructed. This initiative is part of MMRDA's broader plan to operate depot-free metro corridors.
The elevated maintenance deck, being built parallel to the Eastern Express Highway (EEH), will feature eight pit lines, enabling staff to carry out routine inspections and minor maintenance. For major overhauls, rakes will be transported to the Mandale depot. MMRDA officials highlighted that this arrangement allows the metro to function efficiently without waiting for the Kanjurmarg depot, which could take two to three years to develop after land handover.
The authority had initially requested 15 hectares at Kanjurmarg for the depot, but government procedures have delayed its development due to the land being a salt pan. In April 2023, 15 hectares were handed over, and an additional seven hectares requested in May 2023 for allied activities is still under review. A contractor has already been approved for construction, which will include stabling lines, a workshop, inspection bays, an automatic washing plant, and an operations and control centre, at a cost of INR 509 crore.
Sufficient rakes are available to operate the 15.31-km corridor, connecting Mumbai's eastern and western suburbs. Initially, six to eight rakes will run at intervals of six to eight minutes. Additional rakes can be added once demand grows and the Kanjurmarg depot becomes operational.
MMRDA is also finalizing land acquisition from government, forest, and private owners for several stations along the corridor, including Jogeshwari (W) near IIT Bombay, Kanjurmarg near EEH, and Saki Vihar near Larsen & Toubro. Work has already started, with girders installed and station construction underway, though small land patches are still required for foot overbridges.
