Synopsis

Air India has cancelled at least three flights to the United States after Iran temporarily closed its airspace amid rising tensions with the US, affecting international flight routes. Two flights from Delhi to New York and Newark, and one from Mumbai to New York were called off. Flights over the region that could be rerouted now follow longer paths via Iraq, causing delays. Other carriers, including IndiGo and SpiceJet, also reported disruptions on flights to Europe, CIS countries, and Turkey. Airlines are managing operations amid regional airspace restrictions.

Air India recently cancelled three flights to the United States due to the temporary closure of Iranian airspace amid escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington. Two of the cancelled flights were from Delhi to New York and Newark, and one was from Mumbai to New York. The airline stated that for flights passing over Iran, alternative routes are being used, which may result in delays. Some flights where rerouting was not possible had to be cancelled to ensure passenger safety.

Air India usually uses Iranian airspace for its most direct routes to the US and Europe. With the closure, flights are now being rerouted over Iraq, which increases flight duration and fuel requirements. For some US-bound services, this made operation without stops impossible, resulting in cancellations. The airline is already taking longer routes for many westbound flights due to earlier closures of Pakistan's airspace, adding to operational challenges.

IndiGo confirmed that some of its international flights were impacted and said teams are working to support affected passengers by providing alternatives. SpiceJet also warned that certain flights could face disruptions due to the Iranian airspace closure. The situation comes amid growing concerns over potential conflict between Iran and the US, which could further affect international flight operations.

These developments add to ongoing operational pressures on Indian carriers, highlighting the dependence on stable regional airspace for long-haul connectivity. Airlines are having to adapt quickly to changes while ensuring passenger safety and maintaining schedules, with delays expected for several services to Europe, the US, and other international destinations.
