Synopsis

The Gujarat government has directed municipal corporations and urban development authorities to finalise draft development plans and pending town planning schemes by mid-year, aligning this effort with its successful bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The state has also prioritised planned urban expansion under its designation of the current period as ‘Urban Development Year’, with authorities stressing the importance of rapid, structured growth in preparation for the global sporting event.

The Gujarat government has intensified its push for planned urban development in the run-up to the 2030 Commonwealth Games, instructing all municipal corporations and urban development authorities in the state to complete draft development plans and pending town planning schemes by the middle of next year. This notification forms part of a broader initiative to fast-track urban planning and infrastructure delivery following the state's successful bid to host the Commonwealth Games.

Officials said that the directive applies to all 17 municipal corporations and urban development authorities across Gujarat. Several newly established municipal corporations, including those in Navsari, Gandhidham, Morbi, Vapi, Anand, Nadiad, Mehsana, Porbandar and Surendranagar, currently lack finalised draft development plans, while other bodies are revising existing plans. The government has stressed that finalising these development plans is key to ensuring orderly and sustainable urban expansion in advance of the global event.

In addition to drafting development plans, the government has called for the completion of all town planning schemes that have been pending for years, with some cases outstanding for up to two decades. Officials said that clearing this backlog of planning schemes will remove long-standing bottlenecks that have hindered infrastructure and urban growth.

The renewed focus on urban planning coincides with the state's designation of the current period as Urban Development Year, a campaign aimed at elevating the quality of urban infrastructure and enhancing civic services. State authorities have held meetings with municipal and development agency officials to review progress and outline expectations for the accelerated timeline.

By coordinating planning efforts with the upcoming Commonwealth Games, the government aims to bolster the readiness of cities across Gujarat for increased economic activity, population movement and infrastructure demand that the event is expected to generate. The emphasis on structured growth reflects the state's broader vision of enhancing urban liveability and supporting sustainable development as it prepares to host the multi-nation sporting event in the coming years.
