The Gujarat government is developing five satellite towns near major cities to reduce population and infrastructure pressure on Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Gandhinagar, Surat, and Rajkot. The towns Sanand, Savli, Kalol, Bardoli, and Hirasar will have modern infrastructure, including metro-like public transport, electric buses, ring roads, parks, lakes, and civic utilities. Employment opportunities will be created locally, reducing migration to cities. Urban planners have been invited to prepare detailed master plans. This initiative aligns with Gujarat's long-term vision for balanced urban and regional development, ensuring modern living standards and organised growth.
The Gujarat government has announced plans to develop five satellite towns near key urban centres to reduce the burden on existing cities and promote regional development. These towns are aimed at managing population density, improving infrastructure, and creating organised growth corridors around major cities. The initiative reflects the state's ongoing efforts to ensure sustainable urbanisation while supporting economic activity beyond metropolitan areas.
The satellite towns identified for development are Sanand near Ahmedabad, Savli near Vadodara, Kalol near Gandhinagar, Bardoli near Surat, and Hirasar near Rajkot. Each location has been selected due to its proximity to the main cities, making daily commuting feasible while enabling local employment and infrastructure development. These towns are expected to accommodate residential, commercial, and public facilities in a planned manner to reduce stress on the parent cities.
The government has invited urban planning professionals to prepare master plans for the towns. The plans will cover detailed layouts for transport networks, utilities, public spaces, and essential services. The focus will be on creating self-contained towns with integrated facilities rather than mere extensions of existing cities. Officials have emphasised the inclusion of ring roads, efficient electric public transport, metro-like connectivity, and urban greenery to improve mobility and quality of life.
Each satellite town will include modern civic amenities, such as organised water supply and wastewater management, fire stations, parks, lakes, and recreational zones. Mixed-use development zones will integrate residential, commercial, and office spaces, which is intended to reduce travel time and support local economic activity. The towns will also host employment opportunities within the local area, enabling residents to work close to home while avoiding migration to overburdened urban centres.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Gujarat's urban planning and regional development. It complements earlier smart city projects and infrastructure expansions, which aimed to modernise cities and improve citizen services. By creating satellite towns with planned transport, public utilities, and community spaces, the government hopes to achieve balanced urbanisation, reduce congestion, and support long-term economic growth.
The development of these towns is planned through phased implementation, with master plans expected to be completed in the coming months and full infrastructure rollout aimed by 2030. Authorities are focusing on creating a model where modern infrastructure, local jobs, and essential services co-exist to improve living standards and foster sustainable urban growth.
