Mumbai's metro network is expanding next year, bringing enhanced connectivity to suburbs like Mira Bhayandar and Thane. Phase one of Line 9 will extend from Dahisar East to Kashigaon, adding four stations and linking with Lines 7, 2A, 1, and 3. Line 2B, covering DN Nagar to Mankhurd, is under final testing, while Lines 4 and 4A will connect Thane with key city areas. Line 6 along the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road will also open next year. Additional infrastructure like the Mumbai-Pune Expressway's missing link will reduce travel time by about 30 minutes.
Mumbai is preparing for a major expansion of its metro network, with several lines and extensions expected to begin operations next year. This comes after the inauguration of the Aqua Line from Aarey to Cuffe Parade in 2025, which added a significant transport option alongside the suburban railway network. Ongoing infrastructure development in Mumbai and the broader metropolitan region is aimed at improving urban connectivity and reducing travel time.
Phase one of Line 9, extending from Dahisar East to Kashigaon, is set to open with four stations covering 4.5 km in Mira Bhayandar. Commuters in this suburb will be able to connect to Lines 7 and 2A, providing access to the Western Express Highway and DN Nagar, while interchanges with Lines 1 and 3 will also be available. Safety inspections by the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety began in December, and adjustments are being made based on regulatory feedback. The line's grand inauguration, initially planned for late last year, has been postponed, but partial service is expected soon. Remaining sections up to Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium are expected to be operational in the coming months.
Line 2B, stretching 23.6 km from DN Nagar to Mankhurd via Bandra, Kurla, and Chembur, is in advanced testing stages. Five stations are nearly ready, though limited connectivity may reduce initial ridership. Once completed, the line will strengthen east-west travel across the city. The second phase from DN Nagar to Saraswat Nagar in Khar is planned for mid-2026, further enhancing accessibility in the western suburbs.
The Thane Mumbai corridor, comprising Lines 4 and 4A, will see two-thirds of its route operational next year. The initial 10.5 km stretch from Cadbury Junction to Gaimukh, including the 2.7 km Line 4A extension from Kasarvadavali to Gaimukh, will open early in the year. Delays have occurred due to specialized station design requirements, but authorities are targeting operational readiness for additional segments, eventually extending the line from Gaimukh to Gandhi Nagar in Vikhroli. The full corridor is expected to be completed by 2027, reaching Wadala.
Line 6, a 15.3 km east-west route along the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road, will connect Andheri West, Andheri East, Saki Vihar Road, Powai, and Kanjurmarg. The line intersects major corridors, including the Western Express Highway, and is planned to be fully operational by mid-2026.
Separately, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway is set to complete its missing link in March 2026. This section, featuring tunnels and bridges, is expected to reduce travel time by about 30 minutes, benefiting long-distance commuters.
