The Deharji Medium Project in Palghar district, initiated under the guidance of Maharashtra's Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Shri Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has achieved 80% completion, as confirmed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The project, executed by the Konkan Irrigation Development Corporation (KIDC) and funded by MMRDA with INR 25,991.5 crores, involves the construction of a substantial dam designed to store 95.60 million cubic meters (Mcum) of water. With the capacity to supply 255 million litres per day (MLD), the dam will benefit the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC), CIDCO, and rural areas. The project, targeted for completion by the end of 2027, is expected to significantly bolster water security in the Konkan region.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has reported substantial progress in the Deharji Medium Project, a significant water infrastructure initiative located in Palghar district. Led by Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis and Shri Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, the project has reached 80% completion as of earlier this month, under the supervision of Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee.
Strategically positioned on the Deharji River, a tributary of the west-flowing Vaitarna River, the project involves the construction of an earthen and masonry dam with a total storage capacity of 95.60 million cubic meters (Mcum) and a usable storage capacity of 93.22 Mcum, equivalent to 255 million litres per day (MLD). The initiative aims to enhance water security for Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC), CIDCO, and rural areas along the route.
The Konkan Irrigation Development Corporation (KIDC) has been tasked with executing the project, backed by a financial allocation of INR 25,991.5 crores from MMRDA. The execution contract was initially awarded to PVR Projects Ltd. in July 2006. MMRDA is also actively preparing a detailed project report for a bulk drinking water supply scheme to effectively utilise the water stored in the Deharji Dam.
The proposed dam stretches 2,450 meters in length and stands 71.60 meters high, with a gated spillway equipped with four gates measuring 12m x 6.5m each. The project's current physical progress stands at 80%, with full completion anticipated by the end of 2027. Fieldwork and survey operations are ongoing under the supervision of a technical consultant.
The water allocation from the dam has been strategically planned: 190 MLD is designated for the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation, 15 MLD for rural areas en route, and 50 MLD for CIDCO Palghar. The project is designed to address long-term water needs, significantly improving the water supply framework for residential and industrial use across the region.
Expressing his views on the project's progress, Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis stated that the Deharji Medium Project is a crucial component of the state's efforts to strengthen core infrastructure and ensure water security for the Konkan region. He emphasised that the project aligns with the broader state agenda of sustainable and resilient infrastructure development.
Deputy Shri Chief Minister Eknath Shinde highlighted the importance of the project in advancing water supply systems for the Vasai-Virar and Palghar regions. He commended the collaborative efforts of MMRDA and KIDC in pushing the project towards completion.
Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee remarked that the Deharji Medium Project is a testament to MMRDA's proactive approach in addressing regional water challenges. He stated that alongside the Surya project, the initiative would significantly contribute to meeting the region's potable water requirements, thus promoting sustainable development in the Konkan region.
MMRDA's strategic planning and KIDC's implementation efforts underline the importance of such projects in securing water resources for rapidly growing regions. By integrating sustainable water management strategies, the Deharji Project is poised to significantly enhance the quality of life for residents while contributing to the socio-economic development of the region.
