Synopsis

The Noida Authority is set to issue notices to approximately 250 farmhouse owners for constructing permanent structures on the Yamuna floodplains, areas designated solely for agricultural use. While land transactions are not prohibited, any non-agricultural construction is illegal. Since May 2022, the Authority has demolished around 200 such structures, though many owners obtained stay orders from the Allahabad High Court, temporarily halting further action. Aerial surveys using drones have been initiated to identify new illegal constructions, with plans for a large-scale enforcement campaign.

The Noida Authority is preparing to issue notices to nearly 250 farmhouse owners for constructing permanent structures on the Yamuna floodplains, areas where only agricultural activities are permitted. While transactions involving land in these zones are not illegal, any construction other than farming is prohibited. Since May 2022, the Authority has demolished approximately 200 such farmhouses. However, many owners approached the Allahabad High Court and secured stay orders, temporarily halting further demolition efforts.

In response, the Noida Authority has initiated aerial surveys across the Yamuna and Hindon floodplains using drones to map the extent of illegal constructions. These surveys aim to identify new illegal structures and determine if any farmhouses are being used for commercial purposes. The Authority has also directed the installation of large hoardings in these areas to inform the public that buying land or constructing buildings in these zones is illegal.

The Yamuna River flows through several Noida sectors, including 94, 124, 125, 127, 128, 131, 133, 134, 135, 150, and 168, while the Hindon River passes through areas like Chhijarsi, Shahdara, Suthiana, Garhi Chowkhandi, sectors 123, 118, 115, 143, 143A, 148, 150, and Momnathal before merging with the Yamuna near Sector 63A and Behlolpur. These floodplain areas are designated as "submerged zones," where any form of construction is banned.

While there is currently no plan to demolish existing illegal structures near the Hindon floodplain, officials have made it clear that no new construction will be allowed. If any new illegal construction is found after the survey, officials from the Authority and the irrigation department will be held accountable.

While past actions have faced legal hurdles, the current approach emphasizes proactive surveillance and public awareness to deter future violations. The outcome of this initiative will likely set a precedent for similar actions in other regions facing comparable issues.
