The Charkop elevated road bridge project, aimed at improving east-west connectivity in Mumbai's western suburbs, has had its completion deadline extended to June 2027, according to MMRDA. Originally slated for end-2025, the 3.4-km bridge connecting Malvani and Charkop faced delays due to design changes and utility relocation challenges. Executed by J Kumar Infraprojects at a cost of INR 620.15 crore, the project required revisions to align with existing infrastructure and safely shift underground utilities. Once complete, the bridge is expected to ease congestion on Link Road and improve travel times for thousands of commuters between Borivali and Malad.
The construction deadline for the Charkop elevated road bridge project has been officially pushed to June 2027, according to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The project, which began in December 2022, was originally scheduled for completion by the end of 2025. However, key design modifications and utility relocation challenges have led to a revised timeline.
Planned as a vital infrastructure link to enhance east-west connectivity in Mumbai's western suburbs, the bridge aims to provide a faster alternative to the heavily congested Link Road. The 3.4-km-long elevated road will connect Malvani in Malad West to Charkop in Kandivali West, easing the traffic burden between Borivali and Malad.
The project is estimated to cost INR 620.15 crore and is being executed by J Kumar Infraprojects, a firm involved in multiple major infrastructure projects across the city. Initially conceptualised to be a straightforward elevated road, the bridge design had to be altered significantly due to ground realities and urban constraints.
According to MMRDA officials, the revisions were necessary to accommodate new engineering requirements and ensure integration with existing roads. The changes, along with the presence of underground utilities, have caused delays in the implementation timeline. Shifting water pipelines, electrical lines, and communication cables has further slowed the construction process.
MMRDA confirmed that while the technical groundwork is complete, work on key components of the bridge is progressing cautiously to avoid damaging critical infrastructure already in place. The authority stated that maintaining safety and long-term durability of the structure remains a top priority.
Originally proposed to decongest Link Road and reduce travel time between the eastern and western parts of the western suburbs, the bridge is also expected to serve thousands of daily commuters in the area. The revised deadline of June 2027 reflects the complexities involved in executing a major infrastructure project within a densely populated and developed urban zone.
With a revised completion target of June 2027, the MMRDA aims to ensure that the bridge not only meets current transport needs but also supports long-term urban mobility goals. Once completed, it is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and travel time across the western suburbs.
