Portugal has been identified as the top international destination for Americans seeking a fresh start abroad, as revealed by a recent Expatsi survey of over 116,000 respondents. The desire for adventure, personal enrichment and growth ranked highest among motivators, with two-thirds of participants expressing intent to relocate within the next couple of years. Portugal's Algarve region stood out for its sunshine, outdoor lifestyle, affordable living, English-friendly services and accessible visa options. Kronos Homes spotlighted several prime real estate offerings in the Algarve, appealing to both digital nomads and retirees eager to make the move.
Portugal has emerged as the most sought-after destination for Americans contemplating a life overseas, as per a recent survey conducted by Expatsi involving 116,363 aspiring expatriates. The study revealed that the primary motivations for leaving the US included a desire for adventure, personal growth, and cultural enrichment. A significant proportion of respondents expressed urgency, with nearly two-thirds aiming to relocate by 2026, and 12% hoping to make the transition within the coming six months.
The Algarve, Portugal's southernmost region, continues to draw global attention due to its inviting climate and scenic beauty. This part of the country offers an enviable mix of mountain villages and over 125 miles of picturesque coastline, home to bustling cities and traditional fishing communities. The year-round sunshine makes it ideal for outdoor activities such as golf, water sports, tennis and padel, contributing to a vibrant and active lifestyle.
Dining outdoors is a cultural norm in the Algarve, encouraged by the region's excellent weather. Residents and visitors alike enjoy meals made from fresh, local produce, complemented by the country's esteemed selection of wines. The area's appeal is further enhanced by the widespread use of English among locals and businesses, easing the integration process for American expats. Portugal's low cost of living also adds to its allure; the Algarve was recently ranked the best-value holiday destination for 2025 by Post Office Travel Money's Holiday Money Report.
Visa flexibility further boosts Portugal's attractiveness, with tailored options for retirees, skilled professionals and digital nomads. The Expatsi survey revealed that 30% of respondents were considering retiring abroad, 18% were exploring digital nomad visas, while 17% were interested in skilled worker permits.
Direct flights between the US and Portugal have become increasingly frequent, with Newark Liberty International Airport now offering routes to Faro in addition to existing services to Lisbon and Porto, making travel seamless for prospective expats.
Portugal's diverse property market also plays a key role in its growing popularity. The renowned Vale do Lobo resort, located close to Faro Airport, features luxury villas amid 450 hectares of landscaped grounds. The resort includes fine dining, sports and wellness amenities, along with a pristine 2-km Blue Flag beach. A four-bedroom villa with a private pool and south-facing garden in this resort is currently listed at EUR 2,695,000.
Further west along the coast lies Flamingos Salgados, a residential development set against the backdrop of Salgados Beach and Lagoon Nature Reserve, as well as the Salgados Golf Course. The fully furnished apartments, starting from EUR 330,000, include access to a communal pool, lounge, garden, and bar area.
Monte Santo Resort in Carvoeiro offers a five-star lifestyle beginning at EUR 279,000. Residents benefit from a spa and wellness centre, gym, sports court, and clubhouse, with easy access to Carvoeiro Beach and the renowned Benagil caves.
Those desiring a quieter coastal life may consider Salema Beach Village, where villas are tucked into the hillsides within 500 metres of Salema Beach. With pricing from EUR 340,000, this western Algarve setting is ideal for families, surfers and nature enthusiasts.
Kronos Homes' Regional Director and Partner, Alda Filipe, observed that Portugal remains a top choice for American buyers both as a holiday home destination and for permanent relocation. She noted that the country's welcoming nature, modern infrastructure, excellent healthcare and international schools significantly enhance its appeal.
Kronos Homes, which has expanded substantially across Portugal, now manages the real estate sales at key Algarve destinations including Vale do Lobo, Salema Beach Village, Monte Santo Resort and Flamingos Salgados. In a major acquisition move last year, the firm secured more than EUR 1 billion in property assets, comprising over 750 completed units and an additional 425 properties under development.
Founded in 2015, Kronos Homes champions design-led residential projects across Spain and Portugal, collaborating with acclaimed architects and prioritising sustainability. Their vision of architecture as a societal enhancer shapes each development, ensuring a blend of aesthetic excellence and practical integration.
Developers like Kronos Homes are playing a pivotal role in this transformation, crafting communities that echo the elegance and functionality modern expats seek. For those ready to make the leap, Portugal promises more than a move-it offers a meaningful new chapter.
