Amravati has joined Maharashtra's aviation network with its first commercial flight to Mumbai taking off from Belora Airport under the UDAN scheme. Operated by Alliance Air, the INR 2,100 one-way service promises faster, affordable connectivity for Vidarbha districts. Once dormant, the revamped airport will also house India's largest flight training academy by 2025. This milestone is expected to boost regional real estate, logistics, and job creation especially with the PM MITRA textile park coming up nearby. Experts anticipate a 20–25% rise in land values around the airport, signalling a transformative phase for Amravati's economic and infrastructural growth.
Amravati is finally flying high. After years of delays and anticipation, Maharashtra's Vidarbha region welcomed its first commercial flight from Belora Airport, officially putting Amravati on the aviation map. The launch marks a transformative moment for regional connectivity in the state, especially for the economically significant Vidarbha belt.
The inaugural flight was flagged off on Wednesday by Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu under the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) regional connectivity scheme. The ceremony took place in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and other key dignitaries.
Alliance Air will operate the service using a 72-seater ATR aircraft. The flight departs from Amravati at 11:30 AM and lands in Mumbai around 12:45 PM just 1 hour and 15 minutes in the air. The return leg departs Mumbai at 2:30 PM, reaching Amravati by 4:20 PM. Tickets are being priced at INR 2,100, making it accessible to not just business travellers but also middle-income families.
The launch brings a significant upgrade for residents of Akola, Yavatmal, Washim, and other surrounding districts who previously had to rely on Nagpur or Pune for air travel. It also comes as a boon for educational institutes, medical professionals, textile traders, and even tourists bound for nearby hotspots like Chikhaldara Hill Station and Melghat Tiger Reserve.
The airport, originally developed in 1992 for non-scheduled charter flights, remained largely underutilized for decades. However, under the recent aviation push by the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC), the Belora airstrip has now been fully revamped into a commercially operational airport.
The airport will also support the upcoming PM Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel (PM MITRA) park planned nearby, expected to create over 20,000 direct and indirect jobs.
Belora is only the start. With Maharashtra aggressively pushing regional air infrastructure, other cities like Sindhudurg, Gondia, and Solapur are next in line for commercial operations. The state government is also encouraging public-private partnerships (PPPs) to upgrade Tier-3 airstrips under the UDAN scheme.
For the people of Vidarbha, the skies just got closer and the opportunities, much bigger.
