Indore's Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport is finally advancing its long-delayed expansion with the acquisition of 20.48 acres of land situated below Bijasan Tekri. The move comes after a seven-year pause due to road connectivity issues linked to the Maa Bijasan Temple. A new alignment plan involving the Super Corridor and an alternate access route has cleared the way for development. With a project cost of INR 2.53 crore, tenders have been floated for a boundary wall around the site, which will house a multilevel car parking facility and eventually support the construction of a new terminal alongside metro connectivity, shopping zones, and food courts.

The long-awaited expansion of Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport in Indore has regained momentum with the acquisition of 20.48 acres of land located below Bijasan Tekri. This parcel had been held up for over seven years due to logistical and religious access challenges, but the airport authorities are now proceeding with the initial stages of development, starting with the construction of a boundary wall around the site.


The land in question was previously entangled in a dispute because of a road that passed through it, connecting Maa Bijasan Temple to Dhar Road. This road held significant religious and community importance, preventing the airport authorities from moving ahead with their expansion plans. However, the situation was recently resolved after officials agreed to create an alternative access route.

The revised plan includes an extension of the Super Corridor and the development of a new road near the Central School, which will facilitate uninterrupted access to the temple while simultaneously freeing up the required land for airport use. With this alignment now in place, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has invited tenders for the construction of a boundary wall around the acquired land.

The tender outlines a project cost of approximately INR 2.53 crore and includes provisions for security huts as well as a boundary wall for the nearby residential zone. The completion timeline for the work has been set at nine months, with the boundary wall forming the immediate priority.

Once the boundary wall is completed, the acquired land will be used to develop a multilevel car parking facility to support increasing passenger traffic. This facility is also seen as a crucial preparatory step toward the future construction of a new airport terminal. Additional infrastructure being considered for the site includes escalators connecting to the upcoming underground metro station, shopping spaces, and food courts-indicating a plan for a well-integrated and passenger-friendly terminal area.

This expansion plan is part of a broader effort to modernize Indore's airport infrastructure, keeping pace with rising air traffic and growing urban development in the region. The airport, which is among the busiest in central India, has seen increased demand for better amenities and enhanced capacity in recent years.

The planned improvements, including parking structures, metro access, and terminal expansion, signal Indore's readiness to support higher passenger volumes and attract greater commercial activity. More than just a local development, this project reflects India's broader ambitions in scaling up aviation infrastructure to meet future mobility demands.
