The Andhra Pradesh government has instructed APIIC to assess Lulu Group International's proposal and secure approval for reviving its shopping-mall project in Visakhapatnam. To facilitate this, VMRDA will return 13.43 acres of Harbour Park land on RK Beach Road to APIIC. Lulu Group, which previously planned the project under the TDP government, saw it canceled in 2019. The company has now reaffirmed its commitment, proposing a world-class hypermarket, Funtura amusement park, fine-dining food court, 8-screen IMAX multiplex, and ample parking. Once completed, the mall will be a key shopping and leisure destination for residents and tourists.
The Andhra Pradesh government has taken steps to revive Lulu Group International's shopping mall project in Visakhapatnam, directing the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) to thoroughly evaluate the proposal and secure necessary approvals for its swift implementation.
As part of the initiative, the government instructed the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) to return 13.43 acres of Harbour Park land on RK Beach Road to APIIC. This move aims to facilitate the long-awaited project, which is expected to transform the city's retail and entertainment landscape.
Lulu Group International reaffirmed its commitment to the project in January, submitting a proposal to the state government expressing its willingness to proceed with development. The company's plans include a modern shopping complex featuring a world-class hypermarket, an amusement park for children named Funtura, a fine-dining food court, and an 8-screen IMAX multiplex. Additionally, the project will incorporate extensive parking facilities to accommodate visitors.
Upon completion, the mall is set to become a premier shopping and entertainment destination, catering to both local residents and tourists. The project is expected to enhance the city's infrastructure, attract investment, and boost the region's economy by creating jobs and promoting tourism.
The origins of the project date back to the tenure of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government from 2014 to 2019, during which a prime plot near RK Beach was allocated for its development. However, the project was canceled later in 2019. Following this setback, Lulu Group shifted its focus and launched a mall in Hyderabad.
Now, with renewed interest from both the government and the company, the state may once again allocate the same land near RK Beach for the proposed development. After the project's cancellation, the land had been handed over to VMRDA for auctioning, but it will now be restored to APIIC to facilitate Lulu Group's plans.
The revival of this project is expected to bring world-class shopping and entertainment facilities to Visakhapatnam, further enhancing its reputation as a growing metropolitan hub. By integrating modern retail spaces, leisure attractions, and premium dining options, the mall aims to offer a comprehensive lifestyle experience.
